This book provides an excellent developmental framework for assessing the condition of a relationship. Treatment is then tailored to the needs of the individuals and the needs of the relationship. This book is a must for anyone providing marital counseling.

Though this is a text book for therapists, In Quest of the Mythical Mate is easy to read and offers powerful strategies for couples. If your communication is stuck in negative patterns, following the models offered in this book will help. In particular, the fair-fighting guidelines are useful. These are not prescribed by the book, but agreed upon between the parties, suited to the unique circumstances and needs in each relationship. There is also a structure for communicating difficult issues which can be very useful in disarming potential conflict. My partner and I found it very useful in improving our communication and our understanding of each other.

This is an introduction to the work by Ellyn Bader Ph.D. and Peter Pearson Ph.D. The 7 cassette tapes contain a workshop given by the two, discussing their work through the Couples Institute of viewing relationships as developing through stages. It meets my current needs perfectly because it defines terms, explains concepts and gives numerous examples.

This book provides a decent framework to approach the subject of couple's therapy. However, I find that Imago therapy is definitely a superior choice. Check out Imago before you buy this book.
