Product Description

The WL Toys V959 Future Battleship Quadcopter is the perfect machine for those curious about quadcopters. Designed with simplicity in mind, it is light weight and its flight characteristics benefit from this design feature. Constructed of durable elastic materials and graphite booms the light weight enhances the crafts power to weight ratio. The 4 rotors are driven by 4 motors protected in plastic housings. The rotors are also gear driven which relieves the stress on the motors. The WL Toys V959 handles exceptionally well. With the help of an on board gyro and adjustable control sensitivity, the V959 is perfect for pilots of different skill level and ages. The V959 is agile, and it has the ability to do flips and tricks. With the push of a button on the transmitter the aircraft will enter trick mode allowing the pilot to perform flips and rolls. The V959 also features LED lights that helps the pilot recognize the orientation of the helicopter and aids the pilot in low light situations. One very special feature of this V959 is the mounted spy camera on the bottom of the craft. Its adjustable lens angle allows it to be more flexible in capturing shots. The WL Toys V959 transmitter features a 2.4ghz radio system. This means you don't have to worry about signal interference and you have the ability to fly many of these at one time.

I purchased this badboy quadcopter for a video production project with great expectations. I even went the extra mile and purchased 5 additional batteries so that everything would run perfect.I got my quadcopter and started it up. Only 3 of the 4 propellers worked properly and the other one ran slowly. With only 3 propellers working it can never fly, only flip over. Tried it again and this time nothing worked.Changed the batteries and nothing worked. I contacted this seller and he agree to offer a full refund. I was given a "mailing address" to their location in china and ship out the package. The seller claims he never got the package. So i never got my refund. They claim that all quadcopters are tested before they are shipped but they accidentally left the test run video on the quadcopter that they sold me. The video clearly shows the copter flip over in the first test run. The second time it flew sideways into a wall before crashing to the white tiled floor/ground. Then they had the nerve to box it up and ship to me. Don't trust this product and the seller. Refunds are impossible and a total waste of good money.

It took around two and a half weeks to arrive. The batt charger had a EU plug so I had to order a EU prong to US adapter so I could charge the battery. The 'copter is a little fragile so I would consider it not good for beginners.

The vid and pic quality is not bad. Either pics or vids can be initiated from the remote control - pics from the top lower right hand button and vids from the button on the back left of the controller. Pressing either one causes the word 'function' to temporarily appear on the transmitter display. This can be confusing - the manual is not clear on how to operate the camera. One button press starts the vid cam, a second button press ends the vid. The cam has a led on the bottom that is green when it is ready, and blinks red when the cam is in use.

The 'copter is fairly stable. Inside, you need a fairly large room to fly it in, or you will break it when you crash into things. Outside, the more windy it gets, the harder it is to fly. I am a beginner at flying 'copters, my only previous experience being with a syma 107 IR indoor 'copter which is quite sturdy and resilient when it comes to crashing into things. Crashing this quad 'copter in the same way I have done with my little syma would break it pretty quickly. However, you can fly this quad 'copter outdoors, in the middle of an open field - and probably figure out how to fly it before you break it.

And even if you fly it and break it, you can have a vid of how that all happened. The cam records on to a removable camera flash card that holds (according to my computer) 1.8 gigs of info. This is more memory than you need for the battery limited flight time of around eight or ten minutes.

The quadcopter shown and sold in this listing is a WL Toys V959, which is very decent platform for starting out in the world of aerial video.

It is available from many American vendors as well as the chinese sources.

The WL Toys V959 is a "purpose built" quad based on a well tested platform. It provides a low cost entry into the world of aerial video. While we have rated it Advanced Beginners, it would suit a total beginner (noob, newbie) if they removed the camera and learned the basic operation outside in calm winds or inside in a very large area.

The V959 is quite stable and tame, which is best for video - and the percentage settings on the transmitter allow for more aggressive moves - but beware, the resulting videos are likely to give you and your audience motion sickness. The secret to good quad video is for the craft to stay as still as possible and for all movements to be slow.
The V959, in our opinion, is better than fitting the keychain cams on most small beginner quadcopters. The range seems longer than some others (Syma X1) - although I have not measured this exactly, I flew at least 150 feet away and returned with no problems.

More advanced quadcopter users will have no need for this quadcopter, as they likely have better platforms for flying cameras.

This video copter is a BLAST to have fun with!!!, and the video and photo quality from the tiny onboard pinhole camera is WAAAAYYY better than I had anticipated (nothing superlative obviously, but very good for its low price point)

Even it light winds the four rotors manage to keep the copter flying where you'd like it to go . . .

The onboard battery lasts around 10 minutes, and then I switch it for another fully charged 2nd battery . . .

The transmitter range is easily a football field or more (I haven't tested the "outer limits" of distance, since I live near water, and don't want my copter drowning if it gets out of transmitter range) . . .

One other thing I just noticed, is that the video camera "head" pivots, so you can aim the camera at its normal "level" attitude, or you can angle is downward at the angle you might like, for when your copter is much higher up in the air . . .

So far, the copter has had a few "less than soft landings", yet it has zero damage so far, and from previous copters I've learned that if a crash is imminent, then shut off all throttle to the copter so that the blades will be "free spinning" upon impact . . .

Video and photo transfer to my Apple iMac is seamless, and the videos are in ".avi" format, which Apple's Quicktime plays, and with video converter software I can convert the videos to whatever other video format I want . . .

I just ordered two additional copter batteries, and a 16GB "extreme duty" SanDisk micro memory card as well, so on trips, I can stop and take aerial video footage of the local sights, then charge the batteries later, and with 16GB, I'll have plenty of onboard video storage capabilities . . .

one note of caution . . .
