Editorial Reviews

In 2012/2013, The Who embarked on the Quadrophenia and More Tour, performing their landmark rock opera in its entirety, marking the 40th anniversary of the original 1973 release of this double-album masterpiece. The critically acclaimed and highly successful tour closed at London's Wembley Arena.
Recorded on July 8, 2013, QUADROPHENIA: LIVE IN LONDON 2CD set features The Who in peak form, performing Quadrophenia from front to back, in its entirety, plus a special set of some of their all-time greatest hits. The audio captures the band's dynamic performance in front of their hometown crowd and features blistering performances of 'The Real Me', 'The Punk And The Godfather', 'Doctor Jimmy' and a powerful performance of 'Love Reign O'er Me'. In addition to their performance of Quadrophenia, the band tear through classic tracks such as 'Pinball Wizard', 'Who Are You', 'You Better You Bet', 'Baba O'Riley', 'Won't Get Fooled Again' and 'Tea & Theatre', from their 2006 release 'Endless Wire', with the intensity and power only The Who can conjure.

Well, after 40 years we finally have a live, official audio release of the The Who's 1973 masterpiece - "Quadrophenia". I purchased the boxed set which includes the Blu-ray video, the regular DVD, 2 CD audio and a 5.1 mix of the studio album. I think it's a highly enjoyable set - Roger's singing is surprisingly a little better than I expected, and Pete's licks are in tact. I truly can't understand some of the other reviews here - give it one star because you are tired of compilations and live albums?, Knock off a star because it does not include auto-rip? (I was actually able to download the tracks from Amazon for free before I actually rec'd the package), Give it two stars because the box set from two years ago did not have a complete 5.1 mix? Totally ridiculous. Reviewed on its own, this is a nice release. The sound is good, picture is nice, packaging is cool and it's a great live show of Quadrophenia for God sakes!! Any Who fan worth his or her salt has always wanted a nice live release of this show. Granted, We don't get John or Keith, but the tribute paid to them during the show I think worked ok. Also granted - the show is from 2013, and not 1973 - yes, there are side musicians etc.. but it's still a great, at least 4 star show - one of the more unique rock shows ever attempted and it's nicer than the video of the 1997 show which I believe was mono and certainly not the video quality of this new release. Encores are cool and if I was to complain about anything, it would be that they could have included the great Quadrophenia documentary that the BBC put together last year - it would have been a perfect bonus, but I am not going to knock it down to two stars because they didn't do something I would have liked LOL. It's great to finally get a 5.1 mix of the studio album which is included as a "bonus" to this live set. Yes, the full set of songs should have been included with the 2012 set, but at least we finally have it now.

This review is for the deluxe 5 disc set. I also own the 'Director's Cut' that came out last year, and that set really left me wanting. That was a great package, except for the 5.1 mix DVD-A 'sampler' of tunes from the album. My two thoughts then were: 1. why bother if you're not going to mix the whole album in 5.1, and 2. I hope that when it does get mixed it's a lot better than those samples.

This version of Quadrophenia, as the title states, features a live version performed in 2013 at Wembley. You get a Blu-Ray, a DVD and audio CDs. WOW, the band sounds great. Roger's voice is strong, and Pete is a rhythm power house. I went to see them perform Quadrophenia in 1997, so I passed on the chance to see them in 2012. I am now kicking myself big time. The band is clicking, it's typical Who on a great night. They start off a little stiff (I mean this is a complex piece to play), but get better and better with each song. Scott Devours is great on the drums. Of course he's no Keith Moon, but Keith does appear via film singing "Bell Boy". Pino Palladino's bass sounds better on this mix than any other live performances I own. Of course he's no John Entwistle, but John also appears via film playing the bass solo on "5:15".

It's great to hear a full band performance of "Drowned" again. The videos playing during the songs have been updated since the 1996-97 tour, there is still a lot of the post-war Britain films, but there are more pictures of the band and a montage near the end that goes up through modern times. Hard to believe these guys are still this good.

So what else do we get with this? Oh disc number 5...almost forgot. WOW again. The 5.1 mix on the Blu-Ray with this exceeded all my expectations.

Lifelong Who fans like me will buy this anyway and won't need a review from me to encourage them, but for what it's worth I think this is exceptionally good. It's very well produced, but most importantly the performance of the band is simply brilliant.

I was a little sceptical about whether this would really be any good. A fine show, certainly, and Pete and Roger can always be relied upon but I did wonder about the overall effect. In fact, in places I prefer this to the original album - something I never thought I'd say after 40 years of loving the original. Roger's voice has matured and mellowed somewhat and his diction isn't as crisp as it was but, by God, that heart-racing power is still all there when he needs it. The high notes in Is It In My Head, for example, are still spine-tingling and I'm One is an absolute masterpiece here, I think, with thrilling, thoughtful vocals, some fine acoustic guitar from Pete and superb work from the rest of the band. Age has brought a greater depth and sense of meaning to their performances without losing one jot of their sheer visceral power and excitement. I'm thrilled and a little surprised at how good this is.

I also think special mention should go to Scott Devours on drums. I didn't think it possible for anyone to replace Keith Moon, and in a sense it isn't - he was a unique one-off. Devours has the sense not to try to imitate the inimitable but he gets the sense and feel of the man somehow, and although the drumming isn't Moon and never could be, it feels exactly right and I think it's a brilliant performance which really adds to the set.

The sheer impact of the final three tracks of Quadrophenia - 5.15, The Rock and Love Reign O'er Me - is stunning.

Why would you buy
This DVD is a keeper. The band sounds great, 5.15 sizzles and the archival big-screen footage of Moon and Entwistle blended with the live band are great. There's very little footage of the "new performers" (almost no footage of bassist Pino Palladino). You being a fan of the original... Read More
