5.0 out of 5 stars Classic
A great game in its time and a true classic today. It's THE game to have for cyborg killing, big weapon shooting, ultra macho, adrenaline pumping, super violent action. Great for single player and multiplayer fans alike. No FPS library is complete without this game.

3.0 out of 5 stars fun..for about 20 min
I liked this game a lot but the only drawback was tha i have windows xp and w/ windows xp the graphics really [were bad]. It totally took away from the gameplay. If you're looking for a really good shooter go try Ghost Recon. but otherwise quake 2 is pretty good for the money. Be warned xp users their is a fluke in this games graphics for xp. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Cool Game!, November 24, 2001

This is one of the greatest games I've ever played. It inspired me to help with Quake III and Quake IV. John Cash is a really nice guy for letting me send in ideas, and for using them. This was a great game and I used to think that nothing could beat Quake 1. If you own this game, I suggest you buy Deus Ex or Tomb Raider depending on what style your computer is.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome game, trust me, May 28, 2003

This review is from: Quake 2 (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
I've had Quake II for over 4 years, and at one point played it for over 4 hours a day, every day. I've waisted thousands of hours on this game, and know everything there is to know about it. I was once one of the top thousand in the world. Take it from me when I say this truly is THE best game ever produced, and that's saying something since it was released in 1998. The single player mode gets old quick, but online multiplayer is so intense and down-right FUN that it can drain years off of your life. I've moved on, I haven't played it in several months. But I owe it to this game to say it really is the best and anyone assembling a PC game collection needs this game.

As for buying hints, don't buy this game for any of the game consoles, because they stink; stick with the PC/Mac version. Also, don't buy it unless you have a internet connection and intend to play multiplayer, because it will get old quick otherwise. Also, don't buy this game unless you have at least a medium-good graphics board (usually at least 16MB), along with other elements of your PC being relatively robust.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best First-Person Shooter of All Time!!!, December 4, 2005

Quake 2 was unbelievable to me the first time I played it. I could not believe how good the graphics and sounds were in the game! The only first-person shooter I had played prior to Quake 2 was Doom 95. I think Quake 2 came out in 1998, but I didn't know anything about it until 2000. You should purchase The Reckoning mission pack for this game. It is truly a masterpiece! The graphics in The Reckoning are astonishing, and the artificial intelligence is remarkable! The Reckoning mission pack will also upgrade your version of Quake 2 to the latest version. In the game, you play as a tough space-marine who must eradicate the Strogg before they take every human on Earth captive and use their body parts to make more Strogg. You are a one-man army, and you must kill or be killed. You will jump, swim, and solve complex puzzles to locate the keys to open the doors that will lead you to the main boss known as the Makron. Be sure to use the Power Shield! I played the game for about a month without knowing how to use it, and I kept getting killed because I didn't have enough armor. The Strogg are crafty, especially the ones in The Reckoning. They will hunt you down wherever you hide!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best shoot 'em up for a Pentium III or less, April 2, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Quake 2 (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
I resorted to purchasing older video games, like this one, because my computer can't handle Quake III or the other new ones that ask for a Pentium 4 and a fancy graphics card.

I don't mind the age of this game one bit. It's great fun and brings me back to the good old days of Doom II, except this is better, graphics-wise. Extreme value for the money (I paid about $9 for a used copy from a third-party seller). Why buy new games at all?

I had to tinker with Quake II's video options for a few minutes before arriving at an optimum setting. It does not auto-detect your setup, unlike modern games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Game, December 28, 2002

After reading all the reviews, there is one argument I like to write here:

Thousands of fans sites all over the internet, if not millions devoted to Quake II.

So better than trust the word of the reviewers, live the Quake II experience for yourself, love it or hate it, but one thing is for sure, you won't be indiferent to it.

An excellent game, revolutionary for its time. It kept me up many nights playing multiplayer. All the mods available for this game alone make it one of the best out there.

Whoa, this one's a biggie, basically Q2 is Quake to the 100th power! This game is simply outstanding,I really don't understand the bad reviews on this page.Anyway Q2 involves YOU fighting a bio-mechanical alien race that has used US as body parts to make more of THEM.The weapons in the game are very cool, from shotguns to BFGS.Why am I wasting my time?Go buy Q2 and see for yourself...

5.0 out of 5 stars THE classic, September 9, 2001

Gotta love this game. since I bought it in '98 I played through it a couple of times, and I played it again on my new PC. Back then it was really cool to see a game that actually had missions in it =)
The gameplay is just great, its still one of my favorite games, and one of the 5 commercial games I have installed. Occassionally I go back to this game to play through a few units or play with a couple of friends over the LAN or modem.
I got bored with Quake3 very quickly, but this game still gets me coming back every once in a while!
If you don't own this game yet, I can tell you this is a $10 well spent (it was a $45 well spent too, back in the day:)
