4.0 out of 5 stars Great game, poor overview by amazon
Quake 3 Arena is a great game. The weapons are hardly groundbreaking innovations. But why would they need to be? I own both this and Unreal tournament and for pure deathmatch competitions nothing beats Q3A. It's focus on gameplay over a multitude of weapon modes is what really allows it to shine. Games like UT can become to bogged down in the cuteness and novelty...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to Par
All in All, I don't see what the big fuss was about. Don't get me wrong, Q3 is a great game, but i think Half-Life beats it hands down with TFC and CS. Q3 IS just a souped up version of Q2, and Quake can get really old after weeks of playing. :P And on a final note, I just couldn't get into Q3 as much as I did Q2 because the levels weren't as real. It was too...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game, poor overview by amazon, June 19, 2000
This review is from: Quake 3: Arena Elite (CD-ROM)
Quake 3 Arena is a great game. The weapons are hardly groundbreaking innovations. But why would they need to be? I own both this and Unreal tournament and for pure deathmatch competitions nothing beats Q3A. It's focus on gameplay over a multitude of weapon modes is what really allows it to shine. Games like UT can become to bogged down in the cuteness and novelty of 25 weapon fire modes. And let's not even talk about the unbalancing caused by the redeemer.

On another note, the Amazon overview of the game is completly incorrect. A) There is no flamethrower built in to the game, some mods include one, but ID did not. B) What player classes? Again, there are some great mods which provide team fortress gameplay (Weapons Factory and Q3Fortress), but character choice is inconsequential in relation to gameplay in vanilla Q3A.

5.0 out of 5 stars buy this game or die! (literaly!) this is an amazing game!, November 11, 1999

I'm just kidding about the die part! But just if you ever bump into me over a internet sever you will die!

I have played, studied, and have been amazed by this masterpiece. I've had the most recent tests for Q3arena and the add-ons for it and they are top-notch quality and fun. If you have the right hardware and a good, compatible computer with a nice 3D card such as a TNT2 ultra or Gforce that support 32bit colors you will enjoy this game. I have seen the games that try to mach up to a game like this, such as UnrealTournament and they dont come close! I tell you that this game is unbelievable, and is far ahead of it's time! I not just talking about pretty looking effects, but I am also saying that there is incredible detail and realism such as 360 degree sphears and real-time reflections that actualy show the world around. If you didn't like Q2 (i cant see why you wouldn't) you will be more than pleased with this STATE-OF-THE-ART tech that is leaps and bounds ahead of it's time. OH! and by the way, this game is way better than Half Life. hope you enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Near-Flawless Deathmatch Experience, September 27, 2000
By

This review is from: Quake 3: Arena Elite (CD-ROM)
I've always been an Unreal Tournament person, but lately I've been playing the Q3A demo a lot and decided to get the full version. The engine is the smoothest and most powerful I've ever experienced in an FPS. It is fast as Hell and accomodates an extraordinary degree of precision in regard to movement and aim, which is easily noticable if you use a mouse that takes advantage of unusually high-res environments (I use an Intellimouse Explorer). Unfortunately, the graphic designs for a lot of the levels using it are kind of boring aesthetically... lots of castles and gothic constructions, and those space levels with the jump pads. Then again, most of my favorite flashy, unconventional UT levels had bad framerates. I did find the weapons a bit of a problem, not so much because they are unoriginal as because they are unbalanced. It is rare that anyone uses anything other than rockets and railguns, which hurts gameplay a bit. The built in alternative modes of play are not great, but the mod community is fairly advanced. I still like UT more, but any true FPS fan should have a copy of this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Defacto Death-Match game!, April 12, 2002
This review is from: Quake 3: Arena Elite (CD-ROM)
I just recently got this with my new computer and I have to say it's the Alpha and Omega of DM games. Great graphics. The single-player could have been better, but the whole point of making this game was to concentrate on the multiplayer online game. Like tweaking the netcode and balancing out weapons. Everything is great. Recommended buy to any id or DM lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!!!!!, September 12, 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Quake 3: Arena Elite (CD-ROM)
This is the greatest game!!! Why? Quake3 arena differs from quake and quake2 is that there is no single player... I always found the single player parts of these games boring. I never beat the game with out cheating because I hated running out of ammo or having to face the same dude over and over again. Quake3 arena is all multiplayer, and the expansion pack is moving even farther into the multiplayer field. It is addictive (I know 10 college students that were kicked out because of it) some people do not like the maps or the boring death match stuff that came in the box with quake. Quake is better than unreal tournament for many reasons. in quake you have a wide variety of guys to choose from, if you don't like what is there you can make your own. THE GAME PLAY IS INTENCE. The number one reason why quake is better than UT is because ID software released the source code for the game. When they did this, it allowed anybody that wanted to change the game and make MODS, MODs are modifications to the game like.... Instagib. Rocket Arena 3. Weapons Factory Arena. And many many more.. If you get board then play a different mod, it is like playing a hole different game.

GIB YOU LATER

5.0 out of 5 stars Quake3 gameplay, December 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Quake 3: Arena Elite (CD-ROM)
Unfortunately, as Quake3 has probably only just been released in the UK, I haven't had the chance to play the full game yet. however, I have downloaded the 50MB demotest, and I have been a Quake fan ever since the original was released. To people who have yet to experience Quake, I can inform you that this is NOT a sneak-em-up or first-person type strategy affair. This is pure, simple, fast-paced action. You'll probably only like this game if you either enjoy the best graphics the gaming world has seen or very, very fast action.

And there is no doubt that this game is by far the fastest of the Quake trilogy. Quake I was fast, QII slower, but with better graphics and more strategy involved. This game combines the two and inproves on both multi-player wise. However, it is important that you know that this is mainly a multiplayer game. The whole single-player experience is based around simulating an on-line environment, but since you're reading this, you probably already take part in the on-line gaming scene. If not, this is arguably the best game to start off on.

One more thing: Everything in QIII: Arena is action-oriented. To be honest, you'll have little time to stand around admiring the incredible graphics. When I play, I rarely release the fire button, and on some levels rarely even touch the ground.

If you liked the matrix, and enjoy multiplayer gaming, buy this. It beats Unreal Tournament hands-down, and it can't be beaten action-wise. In my opinion, this is the best game ever..... and I've only got the demo test!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Third Sequel In The Trilogy Turns Out To Be The Best!, December 7, 1999
This review is from: Quake 3: Arena Elite (CD-ROM)
Not since the Last Crusade in the Indiana Jones Trilogy have I seen a sequel blow away its predecessors. After laughing uncontrollably at the amazing graphics, I realized the new Bots were kicking my butt! I figured I'd better start shooting back! This game makes Half Life and unreal look like child's play. You have to gun a few people down with the railgun to really get the tingly feeling! I'd would suggest however, to abide by the rating and not let young children get their hands on this puppy! For the nation's sake! You will not be disappointed, even playing on a modem. I thought the lack of the single player game would be a problem, but the bots make up for it. When you hear the footsteps coming towards you, you can help but get a chill! One of the best yet!
