5.0 out of 5 stars QUAKE is a thrilling, chilling, nerve-shredding experience
There needs to be more games on the N64 like quake. Games that chill you and give you the occasional jump. The music for this game is very professional, and it could even be its own soundtrack. The music really added to the dark, netherworldish enviorment of the game. If you get into really deep thought in the game, you'll get that feeling like your falling down...

3.0 out of 5 stars The Successor to DOOM Isn't a Great Success
Quake is a DOOM-like game from the makers of DOOM that attempts to claim the throne of DOOM as best first-person shooter, but falls short. The graphics are nice, but aren't very detailed or varied, and the enemy design isn't very good. The soundtrack is pretty subtle, and isn't all that great, and the sound effects are only okay, but aside from all of those things,...

The graphics are nice, but aren't very detailed or varied, and the enemy design isn't very good. The soundtrack is pretty subtle, and isn't all that great, and the sound effects are only okay, but aside from all of those things, it's a nice blast-a-thon with some interesting levels and weapons. Give it a try if you enjoy DOOM or Duke Nukem. That's my two cents.

I am writing a book about Quake, and I can't get past the fact that it keeps me up at night, shuddering. . . and wondering what's in the dark .. . . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun game with cool graphics, August 24, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Quake 64 (Video Game)
Quake is a fun game but it is awfully violent. Young children probably shouldent play it because they might get scared or grossed out. But it is a good choice for people who enjoy this type of game. It probably will get you frustrated at certain points such as the Wizards Manse. Which was a hard level for me. But you should have fun playing it. The multiplayer mode is a bit weak with only two players at a time, but it is still fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old-School FPS!, May 21, 2011

Gameplay (Single-Player): Familiar with DOOM? Well, this plays in a very similar manner- Go around levels, collecting keys to open doors, and fragging any creature that dares to get in your way. Simple idea, sure. But, if you're like me, and you just love to blow up baddies and watch their giblets fly, you will be one happy gamer.

Now, I played through on "Easy" and beat the game in one day. However, there are higher difficulty levels which I'm sure would have significantly extended the amount of time it took to be the game.

Controls: Perfect, considering you can TOTALY customise the controls to your liking! More games need this. Main difference between this and DOOM is that you can jump in Quake.

Graphics: I own Quake for the PC, Sega Saturn, and N64. Unfortunately, the N64 version is the only one to suffer from blurry textures. This blur effectively wipes all textures of their smaller details. That, combined with the fact that the environments have more simplified architecture than in the PC and Saturn versions, sometimes leaves the game to appear very dull. However, if your are not overly-familiar with the PC or Saturn versions, this may not be as noticable to you.

Sound: Not much to say here. The sfx and bgm are adequate. Nothing outstanding or horrible. However, Trent Reznor's work is not in this port.

Overall: Despite the poor quality textures and dumbed down level architecture, Quake for the N64 is a great old-school FPS experience. So, if you like games like DOOM, definitely pick this one up! It is more than worth $3 you can get it for here at Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not much different than the PC game., November 1, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Quake 64 (Video Game)
Let's start. Doom 64 disappointed a lot of people because it was very different(and better) than the original 2 Dooms. In response to these claims, iD releases quake 64, which is pretty much a direct port of Quake.

I really like quake. It's pretty fast paced, hyper violent (not that bad by today's standards, but not exactly tame), and very, very fun. Quake was a game that revolutionized how games were made. It was the first first-person-shoot that had a full 3d engine, a physics engine, and the ability to aim up and down (though, if I am recalling correctly, in this game that is a rather unnecessary feature). Unlike Doom and Wolfenstein, this game was real 3d rendered graphics instead of stretched out bitmaps(if you play doom, you may notice that there are only right angles in most things)

Overall, I think this is a fantastic game, worthy of purchase, though you arent missing much if you have the PC version instead of this version.

3.0 out of 5 stars PASSABLE, BUT MEDIOCRE 6 OUT OF 10, December 24, 2007
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Quake 64 (Video Game)
I really tried to enjoy Quake a lot, but unfortunately it gets too repetitive and boring, and it tries to rip off Doom and Resident Evil. The enemies feel really quite stupid and uninteresting unlike the enemies in Doom and Resident Evil and they are just annoying and pesty. Your weapons are kinda cool, but they feel dull most of the time and not very satisfying when slaughtering hordes of enemies. The 3-D graphics are just awful to look at, and have no where near the finesse of the graphics of Doom. Some parts of the game manage to salvage some of the disappointments that linger in it. Unfortunately, this game is marred by boredom and repetition which really kill its chances of being a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quake is for me!, September 22, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Quake 64 (Video Game)
I'm late to this whole id thing, but man, this game is great! I remember watching a friend play Duke Nukem 3D on PC way back, little did I know then that id Software would eventually make Doom, and then this game!
I love the atmosphere. There's some really memorable level designs in here, like The Necropolis, The Dismal Oubliette and The Ogre Citadel. I like to dodge and watch the grenades that are meant for me bounce past as I strafe and turn down the stairs out of view of the first Ogre in the Citadel, see how close I can time it and not get hit, then I sneak up on him and kill him for his troubles. Hah!

Add to the excellent environments the very effective ambient soundtracks, and the game is a work of art I can appreciate. A work of art that one experiences and unfolds with skill and practice. I've had the game for 3 weeks and I'm to Chambers of Torment, stuck there for now. I got stuck on the Wizards Manse too for a while.

Christians playing this game??? Well, if you are a Christian -AHEM, A TRUE AND CORRECT CHRISTIAN WHO IS BETTER THAN ALL THE NON-TRUE AND INCORRECT CHRISTIANS- there are parts in the game where you can see some lines forming a symbol, and that symbol will not just scare you, it may make you think that OOPS, yes, you yourself ARE NOW INDEED GUILTY of doing something against God by playing this videogame on your television.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quake is impressive., February 7, 2005
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Quake 64 (Video Game)
First, id software gave us Doom, then Quake came about....the graphically-enhanced, true 3D successor to Doom.

I bought Quake immediately when it first came out for the N64, because it was the first version of the awesome PC game available to me. It does not disappoint in any way. The graphics are dark, gloomy, and gorgeous. The levels are intricate with plenty of secret areas. The enemies are fast and difficult to kill....that's one of the things this game's really got goin' for it....it's VERY challenging....it'll take you numerous tries to complete some levels....the demons and monsters can and will make mincemeat out of your ass.

Quake 2 for the N64 is a tad better, but if you love FPS Doom-type games like me, by all means, get this game now!

Overall, 9 out of 10.
