4.0 out of 5 stars team power-ups
One of the really cool things is the Team Power-Ups; Ammo regen, Scout, Doubler, and Guard. 4.0 out of 5 stars team power-ups, June 23, 2001

One of the really cool things is the Team Power-Ups; Ammo regen, Scout, Doubler, and Guard. All of these enhance your player allowing you to play a different role or use a different strategy eg when you use Guard, your player is stronger and you can tie up two or three opponents before getting killed while your teammates capture the flag or whatever game. Or in games with a lot of people. weapons can be hard to come by, so Ammo Regen is preferred. My biggest problem is getting connected. Half the servers don't work, they default into a Quake 3 game or create an error. So I am frequently downloading new servers trying to find a place to play with more than one or two others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally a new type of game, October 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Quake 3 Arena Team Mission Pack (CD-ROM)
Finally, quake 3 is more than just shoot them up. It is still a shooter don't get me wrong, but this time it is more than that. You have to go skull harvesting, destroy the enemy base, etc. It is a great addon pack. It will make you even more addicted to the game!

3.0 out of 5 stars Blood & Guts, October 15, 2002

This review is from: Quake 3 Arena Team Mission Pack (CD-ROM)
Well now being a death match player since the days of Doom and Heretic, I do know how to look for an enjoyable game. Though I do miss the whole Mission setting that Quake 3 has lost in comparision to its predecessors as I mentioned in my review of it.

Now to add to the carnage of the original release there is the Team Arena Mission Pack. Packed full of levels to play Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, or the new Obelisk and Harvester modes. The additions to your arsenal are also handy, some of which you may recognize from old encounters.

Overall the game play is good, though I'm a little annoyed you can't seem to use all of the old skins from the original. I'm assuming you have to move them over to a different directory or something. The targeting is fairly smooth, though I don't find it as easy to control as Unreal Tournament. Probably just a preference of mine. I find it's easier to be more accurate in UT then in Q3TA.

So enjoy the vast amount of new levels. Have friends over so you can whoop them. Then again, I actually prefer to team up with friends to whoop somebody else. You never know who'll win the next match. Game On!

2.0 out of 5 stars Quake 3 - to little, too late ?, January 22, 2001

This expansion pack is how Quake 3 should have been - and if you'd have asked me a year ago how good it wasm I'd have probably given a better review.

However, it's surprising how "retro" it felt after playing Star Trek : Elite Force (also based on the Q3 engine) for the past couple of months.

Q3TA adds team mods to bring it into line with the latest on-line games. Some of the mods are a bit unusual, which adds a bit of variety to a stale formula. The game seems to perform a lot better than the original, but Q3 gamers will be on very familiar territory. There are some new weapons, but no "alternate" attacks as in STV:EF, which made it feel tactically a bit more restrictive.

The pace of the game is very fast, which some people may enjoy, but for me, it was a bit TOO fast. I'd almost forgotten what it was like to repeatedly "suddenly" die, with no warning, until I started playing TA. The weaponry seems a bit unbalanced too - repeated deaths in old-Quake stylee, and proximity bombs which blow you to smithereens as you unsuspectingly race around corners.

The speed of the game meant that I was at a real disadvantage as a 56K modem user - since the game seems focussed on old-style fragging rather than tactics, LPB's have a real advantage, and this can mean a frustrating series of "oops ! too slow !" deaths.

In summary, if you like a fast-paced game, with a high degree of difficulty and a scoreline that can change radically in the space of a minute, Q3TA might be for you, provided you have a Ninja Internet connection. However, for me it feels dated, unbalanced and no fun compared to STV:EF.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quake 3: Team Arena is just a mediocre offering from ID, March 2, 2001
This review is from: Quake 3 Arena Team Mission Pack (CD-ROM)
The graphics are great, the gameplay is insanely fast just like Quake 3. But ID doesn't know how to make team play games, and their attempt failed miserably. The new mods are nothing more than team deathmatch with an objective other than kill as much as possible tossed in. Gotta wonder why waste [$] when there are better alternatives available. Mabey in an attempt to be like the rest, Q3:TA's character models look as boring as those in the original UT, either that or mabey it was just ID's stupidity. And yes, it was foolish that ID didn't make Q3:TA win2000 compatible, as win2000 is the most advanced and most reliable OS in the world today, if anything, Jhon Carmack is one of the biggest supporters of Microsoft.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too little, too late, March 15, 2001
By
Gadget junkie (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews

This *is* just a piecemeal offering from Id for a bolt on other companies have for free, or as a patch. The multiplayer is fast(otherwises known as errors in their skeletal system), and the weapons now have alternate fire modes, which other game companies have had for years using the same engine... odd, that. Correct, this is not a single player game as Id never could get the AI down quite right. But, who plays single player deathmatch? Okay, if you're burned out from Counter Strike and all the other Half Life bolt-ons, get this. Otherwise, go download Counter Strike and have at it.
