Book Description

Bloodlines Series April 4, 1997
Spencer has the tough talk down well, and his futuristic L.A. has enough cleverly bizarre and intriguing touches to make this an entertaining adventure.""--Publishers Weekly. ""Unreels as madly as if you'd hitched a ride on somebody else's nightmare. Just sit back and enjoy.""--Kirkus Reviews. The third book featuring British novelist Spencer's hard-boiled detective Charley Case is set in L.A. , in Chandler country, but it takes place in the future, the year the `Big One' took place. The quake has ripped California apart and L.A. is now an island. The story begins when Case is offered a simple job, apartment sitting. But before he's finished, Charley will have been embroiled in a trail of blood that leads directly to the steps of the Oval Office, and more sudden death than a popular abattoir sees in a wet Los Angeles fortnight.

Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

Welcome to the world beyond the Big One of '97, the earthquake that turned California into an island covered by uninhabitable rubble and post-apocalyptic theme parks. Money's been replaced by electronic ``Creds,'' and incarceration has given way to drugs that age you 25 years in a few hours. But some things never change, like the certainty that the apartment that L.A. ``confidential consultant'' Charley Case has agreed to housesit will come complete with the corpse of his absent landlord's sister, that a trail of corpses will follow, along with the likelihood of an emerging land-development scam getting tied in to some highly placed politicos. Forget about following the plot, which unreels as madly as if you'd hitched a ride on somebody else's nightmare. Just sit back and enjoy (if that's your fancy) the catastrophic landscape in this third (but first to appear here) case for Charley Case. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. 3.0 out of 5 stars Hard boiled with a bit of SF, December 11, 1997
This review is from: Quake City (Bloodlines) (Bloodlines Series) (Paperback)
The *hero* is rather 1930's in attitude and it is some time in the future, with exotic weapons and cars. Took several pages to get going, but grows on one. Not a bad read at all. If Bond and The Saint are up your alley, you should like this one
