5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Quake and FPS Fans
The Quake 3 bundle is great for all those FPS fans out there. It comes with Quake 3 and Quake 3: Team Arena. Both have stunning graphics and can be updated with new maps downloaded from the internet. Multiplayer is great for all you 56K users because lag doesn't seem to exist. Effects are great and can keep you hooked for hours. This is overall one of the best FPS...

3.0 out of 5 stars Quake III Arena: AN Extreme Deathmatch

When true gamers think of first-person shooters, id Software should immediately spring to mind. Who can forget classics like Castle Wolfenstein or Doom? Quake III is mainly a multiplayer deathmatch game like Unreal Tournament, but it still has a single-player mode. The single-player mode is entertaining for a little while, but the multiplayer mode is really what the game is all about. Quake III stands out from other deathmatch games for several reasons. For starters, the bots all have unique AI characteristics that cause the bots (computer players) to all behave differently. For example some bots will have better control over specific weapons or be prone to different defensive moves like ducking a lot. Another cool feature of Quake III Arena is the detailed textures of the level design. Simply put, the textures just look good. Especially outstanding are the animated curved surfaces. But this artwork is just eye candy for the careful planning that went into each level design. You'll probably develop your own favorite level that will eat hours away from your life (Deck 16 from Unreal Tournament is my weakness), but each level is fun to play. If you love deathmatch and have played Unreal Tournament one too many times, Quake III is the game for you...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most heavily modified games around., June 7, 2002

This game, along with being one of the greatest FPS death match games is also one of the most heavily modified games I have ever heard of. Not only is there about a billion new characters and such that have been made by various artists around the web but there are also dozens of total conversions, now if your not familiar with game modification let me explain it for you; People out there have great talent and abundant skill and make now characters for you to play as, and in most cases, play againts in bot matches. Now these people make anything from a giant snake creature to Zorak from Space Ghost: Ghost To Coast. Total conversions are completley new games that just use Quake 3 as a base to run off of. So basically you get this game and 20 others if you feel like downloading them. All mods (modifications) are free of charge, my personal fav is Bid For Power.

This bundle also includes the Q3 team arena game witch is pretty fun with multiplayer.

However, if you're looking for a really great bot match game then you would be better to get Unreal Tournament.

The multiplayer for this game is one of the most heavily populated around and you would look forward to a very long and healthy life of online fraging with this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quake 3 is still the best!, September 13, 2003

Quake 3's DeathMatch and CTF cannot be compared. It's got the best graphics and physics of any FPS - much better than recent games like UT2K3 and BF:1942. If you want extremely intense action with superb physics and perfectly balanced weapons, Quake 3 is for you. It has tons of mods, tons of servers, and a huge community. It's easily the best first person shooter in the history of gaming and still remains the king.

Read the FiringSquad review - which covers the game best - in summary:

"So what does Quake 3 give you? It's quite simple: the utter refinement of deathmatch, and the ultimate multiplayer shooter experience - nothing more, nothing less. " -- Dennis "Thresh" Fong

A good free for all of carnage, yet something is missing. I know, a single player mission section. I've been a big fan of the Quake series and of course have enjoyed a little death match on the side as well. Yet what I truly liked the most was the missions you got to play through as the main part of the game.

Quake 2 was one of best for that kind of play. It almost gave you a feel of playing a game similar to Rainbow Six or Rogue Spear. The loss of this from this game sort of saddens me.

With that aside, this game is still very well done. With quite a few odd looking character skins as well as some very fun levels, this should keep you entertained for hours at a time. Though I don't find the controls quite as smooth as they are in Unreal Tournament, I still from time to time enjoy killing a few of my friends. In the game, not literally of course.

Be warned though, the end boss is very difficult when the skill levels increase. He tends to rail you before you've even realized you've respawned.

So beware, but have fun. For there's nothing like joining a game with some friends and blowing their foolish heads off. Kill away, my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite game, January 4, 2003
This review is from: Quake III: Gold Edition Bundle (CD-ROM)
This game is amazing. Having played this game for over 2 years I'm still not bored of it. There are 100's of different modifications for it you can download that will keep you coming back for more. Modifications you can play with Q3 are things like Rocket Arena 3, Instagib, and Urban Terror. Theres even trick jumping mods. The gameplay is perfect and the graphics are amazing. Even with all the newer games I play I still find myself going back to Quake 3.

This is the best Quake yet. The online play is fast and fluid and the graphics are superb. Even offline this CD provides hours of fun (provided your a fan of first person shooters.

The BFG is much improved, more of a directional weapon of mass destruction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hair-trigger intensity, April 3, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Quake III: Gold Edition Bundle (CD-ROM)
Yes, it takes about half a second to die in this game when you're in the hard areas. This game is best played with groups, because there is NO story. That drawback aside, there are some stunning environments. When this game was first released I was amazed that my then-dated computer could run it. The trick is that the ID developers know how to optimize system resources to make the gameplay awesome and the visuals beautiful as well. Granted, this was high-tech six years ago, but the age factor is outweighed by the sheer quality of the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even NOW a great game!!!, March 29, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Quake III: Gold Edition Bundle (CD-ROM)
Even after QUAKE 4 & Doom 3 (and all the other FPS quake/doom rip-offs)have come out QUAKE 3 is still just flat out FUN!!! The graphics are dated, yes, but it doesn't take away from the fact that the game is as addicting as chocolate crack. Capture the flag mode is by far my favorite. I got a couple friends together with our computers hooked up to a router...FREAKIN GREAT!!! If you have to have top notch graphics to have fun then you are probably an idiot who has been born in the past 10-15 years and the only thing that will make you happy is to play the latest U.S. military game(tom clancy, conflict, socom...yawn) and to nurse your pokemon fetish on the side. Stop playing that junk and pick up a shooter that has real weapons of mass destruction.
