Editorial Reviews

2012 two CD release from the Hip Hop collective boasting 35 members which orbits around a core of three producers: Fuzzface, 7-Stu-7 and Katalyst. Fuzzface is better known as Portishead's Geoff Barrow. Disillusioned with much of the Hip Hop around them, the like-minded producers set out to create the type of Rap record they'd want to listen to. That meant gathering one of the most varied arrays of talent ever seen on a Hip Hop record. Invitations were sent out to golden era legends such as Prince Po and The Pharcyde's Booty Brown, indie rap titans such as Dead Prez and Phat Kat, and of course some of StonesThrow's finest: Aloe Blacc, Guilty Simpson, MED and newest signings Jonwayne and Dave Dub all make memorable contributions. There are also some lesser known talents present: band-favorite Coin Locker Kid, Lyric Jones, Estee Nack & more hold it down with their more celebrated peers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early Album Of The Year. March 28, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I am sure that 2012 will have many amazing releases this year and this is one of the 1st. This is a Stones Throw release and for those who don't know here is some info I grabbed off their site. "Quakers is a hip-hop collective boasting 35 members which orbits around a core of three producers: Fuzzface, 7-Stu-7 and Katalyst.
Fuzzface is better known as Portishead's Geoff Barrow, a long-time Stones Throw supporter in touch with Peanut Butter Wolf since championing the Jaylib album back in 2004. 7-Stu-7 is Portishead's engineer and in-house producer at Invada Records in the UK. Katalyst is one of the most respected producers in Australia and a partner in Invada Records." Anyways the rhymes and beats are on point on this album. Most tracks are 1-3 minutes and feature anywhere from 1 to multiple MC's. The beats are really interesting and switch up a lot so it stays fresh through the whole album. Very interesting cast of unknowns and big names in the underground from both the west and east coast. If you are a huge fan of Lil Wayne, Drake, and a lot of the mainstream stuff out now I dunno if you will dig this album. It also seems to flow together very well and reminds me of some of Madlibs work. If you are already a fan of Madlib and Stones Throw Records this cd is a no brainer. If you are a fan of Hip Hop in general this would also be a good investment. Enjoy

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacks cohesion. October 13, 2012
By Kraken
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Not sure about the five-star reviews, maybe I'm just a sucker for more conceptual full-lengths as opposed to hodgepodge compilations like Quakers more resembles. There's a few great, standout tracks. There's a lot of filler. Clocking in at 41 tracks, it'd be a monumental feat to not have filler. I feel that this is more a case of quantity over quality. If you're looking for something to just throw on at a party, or in your car, or just for whatever just to have a hip hop vibe and not really pay much attention to merit of the actual tracks, Quakers may be worth your time. It does get three stars because it is still genuine hip hop and (mostly) nothing too superficial. Just know what you're getting. Nothing here is groundbreaking or that original, and much of it is forgettable.

Top production, top cast, modern and classic at the same time. Few jam emcees. Awesome skills by miners and lyricists. Good to see masterpieces born

5.0 out of 5 stars innovative and amazing March 30, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I have to agree with the previous review, this will most certainly be my favorite hip-hop record released this year. If you're willing to do hip-hop that's not completely radio/pop ready, you will absolutely marvel at the production, lyricism, flow, and feel of the music. It's chillingly awe-inspiring.
