Book Description

In this Third Edition of his bestselling text John W. Creswell explores the philosophical underpinnings, history, and key elements of each of five qualitative inquiry traditions: narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study. In his signature accessible writing style, the author relates research designs to each of the traditions of inquiry. He compares theoretical frameworks, ways to employ standards of quality, and strategies for writing introductions to studies, collecting data, analyzing data, writing a narrative, and verifying results.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This text provides a wonderful introduction, using accessible language, to theories and practices related to the design and conduct of qualitative inquiry. Moreover, it remains a good first resource for students who want to pursue qualitative inquiry; that is, they can return to this text to review fundamental concepts and to find references to other resources about specific topics, approaches, and strategies.” (Carey E. Andrzejewski 2011-10-28)

“Students find Creswell’s books very “user friendly”. They like his writing style, clear ideas, and simple enough language. At the same time, the book presents in-depth information, but because this information is stated in clear simple terms, it makes it easier for the students to comprehend it without difficulty.” (Nataliya V. Ivankova 2011-10-28)

“A very welcome addition to doctoral courses and bookshelves!” (Jeannine E. Klein 2011-10-28)

"I've never found one I like better!" (Trudy Salsberry)

"Clean and comprehensive. Easy for students to follow." (David R. Osborn)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great overview of research methods March 22, 2013
By SD
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book provides an excellent overview of the qualitative research methods. I especially love all of the tables for each chapter that compare each method. Creswell does a wonderful job of succinctly presenting each method in a logical format. I have learned so much from this book and I'm happy I got it.

2.0 out of 5 stars No page numbers inside the book May 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this for use in a graduate class with assigned readings every week. There were no page numbers included inside the book, making it impossible to figure out which sections were assigned by the professor. Recommend getting it in paper instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource December 7, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The use of charts to create an alternative visual to the narrative of the text is extremely helpful if you tend to respond to such visualizations. The discussion of each of five approaches is thorough. I do wonder, however, why the focus on/limitation to five approaches when learninAg about others seems just as valid a pursuit. For example, I'm curious about Applied Action research but no mention of that is made in this text. I've not examined Creswell's other books on qualitative research, so it is possible that he has written on other research approaches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very user friendly and illuminating January 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Before I read this book I was struggling with structuring the research methodology part of my dissertation for a post graduate degree. I found the book exceptionally well written in a clear and flowing manner unlike many books on this subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Information is good, Paperback is hard to take notes in September 18, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book contains great information. They are many tables that make the information accessible and easily understood. However, it is hard to highlight and take notes in the book because of its paperback binding and smaller margins (doesn't stay open on its one, not as much space). As a grad students this is a bit of a downer because it does take me longer to notate the way I normally do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good July 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Creswell does a nice job of presenting the different qualitative approaches in a fairly straight forward manner. But this is more of an introduction. If you are actually going to a do a study you will need to dip into the harder stuff.
