I have read this book and found it to be a very helpful resource. As a novice interviewer it has given me multiple strategies and tips from question design to actually doing the interview. I highly recommend to anyone doing qualitative interviews.

A bit myopic and not very thorough,
This review is from: Qualitative Interviewing: The Art of Hearing Data (Paperback)
The authors began their book by contrasting "positivism" with "naturalist-interpretive paradigms", essentially painting an unflattering portrait of quantitatively focused research in an effort to make their interpretive-constructionist approach more appealing to researchers with a social agenda. They also relativized truth to the point that their approach makes benchmarking the data almost impossible. Furthermore they appeared to be hypersensitive to the need to appear credible to critics; it read like a bizarre prep course in politics rather than an overview of best practices in qualitative data collection. I was looking for some solid, grounded methods in qualitative interviewing and felt like I got a bouquet of anecdotes instead. For more balanced coverage of qualitative research methods check out Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing among Five Approaches

Doing Qualitative Interviewing,

I had the opportunity to read the first edition and the second edition of " Qualitative Interviewing, the Art of Hearing Data" of H. Rubin and I. Rubin and I think that both are very good books for a student or researcher that want to start a Qualitative Analysis of Data using the Interview like the main tool of analysis. Of course that the second editions is actualized in relation to the latest advances in qualitative analysis and the use of personal computers. I am a student of the doctoral program of Management at ESADE ( Spain ) and ESAN ( Perú ).Rolando Gonzales - rolangon

The multi-dimensional interview,
By Phil S. (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Qualitative Interviewing: The Art of Hearing Data (Paperback)
This book is an excellent guide for Interviewers, particularly those on the professional level, in social work and in Legal settings.A difficult aspect of any "informational" interview is to keep the proceedings non-mechanical. Where to inject humour? When to...take a break. How to "take notes" without arousing suspiciousness in the transaction. How to stay in control...manage the situation...without the power play anticipated by the interviewee. The authors are not pontificating for the benefit of those behind the desk, they are employing global research for the benefit of "give and take", between he/she behind the desk *and* at its' front. In the age of "bullet points" and endless lists we have something to engage those who want to keep it professional...and personable. Letter-boxed Tables and Examples are helpful, not excluding the Dialogue guides. |
