"I have used previous versions of the QRI in my own teaching and research and found it a superb informal reading inventory...this inventory has allowed me to help teachers do their best with typically developing and striving readers." -  Karen Jorgensen, University of Kansas

The QRI-5 has long led the field in offering students and teachers alike a reliable and easy-to-use informal assessment instrument. This Fifth Edition continues to emphasize authentic assessment of children’s reading abilities, from the most emergent readers to advanced readers.

One of the keys to the success of the QRI-5 is that it contains narrative and expository passages at each pre-primer through high school level. All are self-contained selections highly representative of the structure and topic of materials found in basal readers and content-area textbooks. This new edition includes new narrative texts that are even easier than the pre-primer passages previously included. At the same time, it provides graded word lists and numerous passages designed to assess the oral reading, silent reading, or listening comprehension of a student as well as questions to assess prior knowledge. Instructors can measure comprehension by retelling passages, using implicit and explicit questions, and using other devices.

What’s New in the QRI-5?

  • Narrative texts even easier than the pre-primer passages previously included, as well as another narrative to all primary grade levels.
  • Passages at pre-primer through second grade levels that are presented with and without pictures.
  • Map and illustrations as part of expository selections at fourth through high school levels.
  • Accompanying DVD content has been expanded to include
    •     Examples of students reading orally
    •     Scored protocols to accompany readings
    •     Directions for administering each segment of the QRI
    •     Tables/Charts that increase consistency of administration, scoring, and interpretation
    •     All student and examiner copies

Don’t forget Intervention Strategies to Follow Informal Reading Inventory Assessment , 2/e (ISBN: 9780205608553)! It’s the perfect companion for the QRI-5 providing strategies to connect the results of the informal reading inventory with the instruction sessions that follow. More About the Author

Significant Achievements of Lauren Leslie, Ph.D.
For 14 years while on the faculty at Marquette University I directed a Literacy Center. The goal of the Center was to improve literacy instruction in urban schools. We enrolled children who had not learned to read by the beginning of 2nd or 3rd grade. University undergraduates in elementary education were the tutors and it was my responsibility to teach and supervised the tutors. This required assisting the prospective teachers how to plan instruction based on assessment results. This project was the foundation of the article by Leslie & Allen cited below.

    Books published
Leslie, L. & Caldwell, J. (1990; 1995; 2001; 2006; 2011). Qualitative Reading Inventory. Boston: Pearson. I have co-authored the QRI which has involved passage selection, question writing, scoring, analysis, and interpretation of scores.

Caldwell, J. & Leslie, L. (2005; 2009). Intervention strategies to follow informal reading inventory assessment: So what do I do now? Boston: Allyn and Bacon. In this book we offer how to use the results of informal reading inventories, particularly the QRI, to plan intervention instruction.

I have used both the QRI-4 and the QRI-5 as an assessment tool for elementary school children. It is a helpful tool for determining a student's reading level and comprehension level. It is not a short, quick assessment (like a reading fluency), but the information gotten from the results are well worth the time invested. It is also possible to "streamline" the process by omitting certain sections of the assessment to best fit your student's needs.
The assessment includes graded word lists, leveled reading passages in both narrative and expository texts, and comprehension questions, explicit and implicit. I have found that QRI gives pretty accurate results. Also, the testing situation can be altered to fit each student - oral reading, silent reading, listening, or a combination of the above.
Also included are handy assessment record sheets. The directions for administration are clear, and implications for results are given. Of great use is the included CD (DVD for QRI-5). It makes for convenient copying the student and teacher pages. I have not yet viewed the enclosed video, but the book claims that it is helpful to those learning how to use the assessment.
Overall, I have found this book to be a great assessment tool.

This is a great resource for testing students' fluency, decoding and basic comprehension.

Do NOT buy it if you have QRI 4. The stories are exactly the same, so the improved layout isn't worth the price.

Grade reading inventory for all readers. Includes word lists and numerous passages. Comprehension questions include explicit and implicit questions. CD with all the resources comes with this book, making it easy to print off a copy quickly if you are unable to get to a copy machine.

QRI is ok. I prefer the Comprehensive Reading Inventory (CRI) for informal reading inventories. The CRI includes phonemic awareness skills and pictures to assess early literacy skills. The QRI does not and is better suited for older children. It does have a nice selection of expository passages though.

Book is worth the money. It's very functional and I was able to use it two semesters in a row, plus write my own lesson plans from it and make worksheets. Includes how to use the tools in it and has stories to use plus grading sheets and grading scales.

I use this for my class. It is difficult material. This is the bible for this type of assessment but I have to use guides to understand it.
