Book Description

0275951510 978-0275951511 February 28, 1995
This collection brings together studies and essays which represent the best work being done in the area of qualitative research in early childhood settings. The research spans the full range of early childhood settings from infant-toddler and home day care programs to primary classrooms. The volume is designed to appeal to scholars doing early childhood research and to graduate students and their instructors in general early childhood research courses, specialized early childhood qualitative research courses, and general qualitative research courses. Experienced scholars doing qualitative work related to early childhood will see the book as essential because, for the first time, a comprehensive treatment of this emerging area of inquiry is provided. Less-seasoned researchers will find the collection useful in providing fundamental knowledge and concrete examples to guide their scholarly development.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This informative and thoughtful examination of qualitative research should be widely read. Well written with excellent reference lists, this is an outstanding contribution to the field. Highly recommended for upper-division undergraduates through faculty.”–Choice

“The potential of qualitative research for authentically sharing children's experiences in child care, preschool, and other early education setting is the focus of this 2-part collection. The number of articles that link children's developmental growth with the adults who influence them in early childhood settings is exciting. An excellent guide for those new to this method of inquiry, the book underscores the importance of qualitative methodology to processes of change in programs designed to meet the needs of young children.”–Readings --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: Qualitative Research in Early Childhood Settings (Paperback)
If you are an early childhood researcher and you need a book that gives you an excellent compilation of insight on what works best for designing a study, Hatch's book gives some of the best, clearest examples that I have read thus far.

He takes a balanced approach by highlighting quantitative, ethnographic, interview-based, and mixed designs. The first half of the book does an excellent job of highlighting research paradigms from an early childhood perspective.
