Back To Basics,

Three Years Ago In The Summer Of '97 Jurassic 5 released their self titled debut EP come LP and it was embraced by the entire hip hop nation. `Concrete Schoolyard' became a instant classic. The only problem though was that at 35 minutes it was a little short and was over before you even realised. At 55 minutes however `Quality Control' is just the right length. In case you don't know Jurassic 5 are a throwback group from the mid-late 80's, they use old school beats and deliver some great flowing rhymes throughout the entire album. The album opens up with `The Influence', which just makes you, want to dance and the all the other 15 tracks on the album maintain this desire to just jump around like a mad lunatic. The beauty of Jurassic 5 is that they've spotted a niche in the Hip-Hop market that there are no happy songs out there anymore. The stand out tracks on the album are `The Influence', `WOE Is Me', `Jurass Finish First' and the 1930's sounding `Swing Set' which is just a pure DJ cut and has no vocals on it and it is just brilliant. Lyrically the album is amazing and the 4 MC's provide some amazing flow particularly Charli 2una who stands out the most. There's nothing bad I can say about the album at all except it drags on a bit in the middle but this is barely noticeable. Overall If you loved there EP you'll love this and if you don't insist on listening to it 5 times a day for the first week of owning it there is something wrong with you.

For all the airplay J5 got, they are still underappreciated. Somehow this group is able to take progressive beats and forward-thinking lyrics and build them on a foundation of old school hip-hop that works together so well, its magical. Every time I play a song from this album at a party (especially Great Expectations- the best track on QC), I get multiple people asking me to identify the incredible music. No hip-hop fan should be without this album.

Truely inspired work, that should definently make some ripples on the rap charts. A true classic from an underground group. With four MC's and two DJ's, the album features gifted rappers and instrumental masterpieces. Chali 2na, Mark 7even, Zaakir, and Akil can flow and harmonize while having individual roles. DJ CutChemist is a genuis for his mixing. With an overall up-beat sound they defy most modern Hip-Hop, boring and repetitive. The West Coast group has a sense of responsibilty, writing great lyrics. It has an old-school feel, where the lyrics are more about battling on the mike and less concentrated on women, cash and recognition. It returns to the roots of rap, house music and political issues. I first heard the single "Quality Control" and I knew if the rest of the album was as good as the single I'd have to get it. I did and I was impressed, a great by for any underground fan or person who is tired of the same old stuff.

wow, this release was long awaited but i must say definitely worth it. Jurassic 5 have turned out a hip hop classic. The rappers flow with great ease, as well as amazing lyrics in their old school meets new school style. Rare funk samples and superb production by Cut Chemist and Numark finish it off- everyone buy this- they deserve the long awaited success

These guys formed in 1993, but they took 7 years to come out with a full release. After hearing the album, you can tell they've been crafting it for quite some time; because it is absolutely perfect. This CD is packed with funky fresh harmonies and some of the most skillful songwriting and rhythms hip-hop has ever seen. Not to mention some great turntable action by Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark. Each song has a pretty similar formula (that never gets old). It starts off with 5 man harmonics and then branches off into solos from Zaakir, Chali 2na, Akil, and Mark 7even. They have an sweet old-school rap sound that keeps you coming back for more. When you listen to "Lausd" for the first time; you really know what these guys are all about; keeping it real, doing it for the love, not for the dollar. This CD will stay in your stereo for a long time; definitely an instant classic.

Say What?,

I love metal. Why would I bother to review a hip-hop CD? Because, it rocks! As many people have said, Jurassic 5 have found a niche. They've noticed that happy and rapping don't mix. So, they released an album that goes back to the days of P.M. Dawn and Run-DMC, a time when hip-hop was new, and exciting. When bad-talking, acting 'tough', and trying to get 'dope' or 'tight' was non-existent. Just listen to "The Influence", or "Quality Control" and tell me those beats aren't wicked. Plus, Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark(whom I respect greatly after hearing their stuff on an instrumental track on an Incubus CD) put some slick grooves and mixes into every song. I really don't like rap, no, actually, I hate rap; but these dudes and House Of Pain cast some light on the genre. This CD is awesome and is good music to chill to. Remember, I LIKE METAL, and this still kicks!

Though Jurassic 5 had gotten good reviews by virtually everyone who i've either spoken to or read about, i was skeptical. The first song i listened to by the group was 'What's Golden,' which i can say now is an average track by the stellar group. When I listened to Quality Control i was blown away. The strength of the album is the charisma and chemistry that is exuded from the tracks. All of the six emcee's have extraordinary flows, if not breathtaking lyrics. one reveiwer went nuts over the abilities of the j5 flows, and i have to say i am in agreement. the rhyme styles are extemely varied to not only the emcee, but the track as well. J5 won't come at you with social change (contribution a bit) but give a fun, upbeat album. i keep finding myself listening to it despite some of the simplicity. one of the better songs in terms of flow and beat is 'the game' a track about rhymes in terms of basketball. not exactly phemonmenal creativity but still done well. j5 gives you a taste of the old school, but keeps you connected enough to the present

To tell you the truth, I'm sick of a lot of mainstream rappers. When will they stop rhyming about women, cars, and the hood?If you're sick of that kind of stuff too, try listening to Jurassic 5. After the intro, "The Influence" starts playing. The second you hear that song, you know this album has to be good. After that song, this album does not let up. It has everything you could want in a hip hop album- positive, uplifting lyrics, great beats, sampling, and mixing. I would have to say that the standout MC is Chali 2NA, although everyone has their own unique sound. The reason I did not give this album 5 stars is because some songs on this album don't measure up to others, but that's ok. No album is perfect. Pick this up if you want a party album for the summer!

OLD SCHOOL RULES!,
By Joseph J Ippolito Jr (USA - PHILLY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Quality Control (Audio CD)
In 1982, rap was music's "brave new world". IT was a heady time in what was to become hip-hop. All around the country, eager new fans opened their RUN-DMC LPs and got hooked by the rhymes, the scratches and the raw attitude. Now, the Jurassic 5, true to their namesake, are going back in time with their new album "Quality Control". For years, the art of flow has been lost in a wash of gangsta wanna-be MCs just acting hard and talking trash. Actually, it was more like acting like fools and saying nothing worth listening to. Instead of getting the meat, the consumer was getting the gristle. Jurassic 5 aim to make you forget all that and take you back time to a time when old school rap meant something. The music on "Quality Control" sounds real and the music means something. The group, comprised of four MC's and two DJs (DJ Nu-Mark and the legendary Cut Chemist), is oversized for a hip-hop troupe. But, they are never too big for their britches. Tracks like "The Influence"and "Great Expectations" exhibit a flare for the kind of real art form rap was intended to be. One track in particular, "Contribution", is capped by recordings of a man singing the praises of his son for being so involved in something so positive. Then, there is a recording of a woman telling him, "....get a job...you're always rappin, rappin' rappin'". It is a funny and poignant moment that emphasizes the differing view points on what rap music is, and has come to mean to the people who make it and continue to be inspired be it. Rap is not a passing trend. And groups like Jurassic 5 are showing that it is here to stay. The only thing fading is the tired cliches employed by many rap also-rans today. With "Quality Control", Jurrasic 5 have made an album that is an early front runner to make an "Best Of..." lists you will undoubtedly see at the end of the year.

This will definitely be a hip-hop classic when we look back on this record years from now. It has well thought out lyrics, smooth production by two of the best in the business, cut chemist and nu-mark, and every song is different. It;s not like most albums out where you listen to one song and all the rest are the same, this is like all the other classic hip-hop records: Beastie Boys, Paul's Boutique; De la Soul, 3 feet high and rising; Tribe called quest, low end theory, etc. They all have the same elements that make them classics. They all are very fun to listen as well. You can listen to them over and over and not get tired. Another reason is they don't sound dated. The lyrics, beats and everything else are timeless. All the songs on this album are excellant. I've never heard anything put out by J5 that wasn't top notch. They are a very creative bunch and deserve all of the praise they can get.
