A masterful blend of wise advice and knowledge based on Dr. Kemp’s historical, clinical, and scientific research. Readers need not worry. He writes on a matter of interest to everyone in an accessible style.

Who might find this book useful? The reading public for certain. Dr. Kemp digs deeply into thinking about quality of life. For example, using a variety of sources he distinguishes between quality of life (QOL) and standard of living. The discussion of quality of life applies not only to those with no particular problems, but to those facing a variety of challenges. One of the most compelling discussions addresses quality of life for those dealing with physical disabilities. What makes this so compelling is Dr. Kemp’s account of how late in life he developed a debilitating physical disorder.

Though written for the reading public, many may find it can be used as a manual for a self- or professionally-directed program. Individuals can easily follow Dr. Kemp’s procedure for assessing their QOL, interpreting its meaning; his suggestions for how to improve QOL are practical ones that anyone can follow.

In addition, a clinician or counselor might develop a six-session regime for individuals to re-orient their perspective on and response to QOL issues. Using the tools and procedures Kemp describes, there might be in-session activities as well as home-work. There is a assessment to assess progress, that also lends itself as a stimulus to therapeutic discussion. For example, his insistence that lack of a poor QOL does not automatically mean a positive QOL. In other words, a “neutral” QOL of life is not one being positively experienced.

The first four chapters cover interesting and well developed background and analysis of quality of life.
