It's a great idea, but requires too much perfection to be practical, at least for home use.

In use, one holds the unit in the right hand and the hapless letter in the left hand, and pulls the unit towards oneself, cutting the end of the envelope open in the process. With business envelopes in good condition, this does work reasonably well. But many envelopes are neither in good condition nor made of good enough (and thick enough) paper, and the cutter bunches the paper up and jams when attempting to start the cut, or merely scores the paper but fails to cut the envelope open.

I suppose in a business, it could be useful as the envelopes are likely to be more suited for this kind of letter opener, and the ceramic blades should prove durable.

Anyway, I've reverted to the traditional razor blade in oval plastic handle opener: <http://www.amazon.com/Baumgartens-Envelope-Slitter-Assorted-67130/dp/B0009FTZVQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1293816336&sr=1-4>.

New type cutter with ceramic operates by sliding it edge-wise on the envelope. In this fashion you run the risk of cutting the contents also if you do not make sure the letter is away from the edge. If you are careful with it, it will work, and will cut paper for one hundred years or more. Ceramic blades are bad-a$$.

This is not a better mousetrap--despite its good looks--. Takes time to "line up"--cuts letters...am keeping it for decoration

I got this letter opener because I needed one and it was the only kind I could find at the store I was at. It doesn't work well at all. Paper gets jammed in it and then it doesn't cut at all and is very hard to get out. It doesn't slice open the length of the envelope so you have to finish by tearing it yourself. Aggravating? Yes. So I am going back to those cheap razor ones you can get for a couple of bucks or less. They are great.

This operated as advertised for approximately 500 envelopes and then it became difficult to ensure a true cut. Now (after over 1000 envelopes) it is necessary to make sure the envelope is perfectly strait and sometimes it may even need to be pushed into the blade at a slight angle. Good news though is it never cut the letter inside or the opposite side of the envelope.

I purchased this item to replace a discontinued item by Levenger known as the "Letter Bean". The slice letter opener is not as effective at opening an envelope as the Letter Bean, because it frequently takes 2-3 passes of the opener to completely extend the opening across the entire top of the envelope. On first pass, the item will "slice" or open approximately 4-5 inches of the envelope only. Average only, okay for the price point. If I had alot of mail to open, would consider something else. Bring back the Letter Bean, Levenger!!

This little gadget has proven most handy and efficient in my days of opening letters, which I do a lot of. It's tiny and compact so you don't have to lug around a letter opener that looks like one of grandma's fine china, butter knives. Although, the ceramic blade cuts through the tops of envelopes like butter. I wish I could give it 10 stars! I love it, highly recommend it, and i'm buying another one just in case I misplace my current one! Thanks Slice, you're the best!

This is really bad. it worked for me for about 10 envelopes, then it start getting worse and worse. Now at 20th envelopes, I went back to my old letter opener.
I bought it in Korea as a souvenir/gift, and I didn't have internet access when I bought it. I thought it was cute, and I should have looked at the Amazon review first.
