When I first discovered Amazon, I had an old Box Cutter of the 1950's vintage that had been my Father's, plus I had a heavy metal green one that I had picked up at Lowe's for two or three dollars somewhere along the road of my life. One day, I saw these nifty little Slice Safety Cutters with a Ceramic Blade and decided that it would be a nice thing to have.

You see, there was a time when I did not open the door to a stack of boxes at my front door almost every day of the week. But then, I had a surgery, which did not go so well, so I had another AND that didn't resolve my problem either. So, of course, the doc said..."Well, let's try something a little different" and the next thing I knew, two more surgeries had gone by the boards. During that period of time, I became acquainted with Amazon. Indeed, I discovered that my every NEED and Want could be solved by something in a box saying Amazon. This was no trouble at first, as I had two box cutters.

But, you know how it is, you open a box, lay the cutter down, get out the item, wander off to put the items away...THEN, because you are no longer 18, you think of a couple of other things that need doing where those items went, and pretty soon, you forget what you came for and what you are doing about Anything. AND, OH BY THE WAY, WHAT DID I DO WITH THE BOX CUTTER?

Having become very savy about Subscribe and Save as the surgeries went by, I began to see the wisdom and poetry in using this method of keeping things in order. Going out was quite difficult. So now, cleaning supplies, food, snacks, cat food, litter and all the necessary items for day in and day out living arrive at my door on a scheduled basis. BUT WHAT DID I DO WITH THE BOX CUTTER?

I put this on my wish list based on the 'Cool Tools' website review and received it last Christmas. Unlike other reviewers, I love this ridiculously simple thing and use it for all sorts of tasks. Removing shrink-wrap, opening Amazon packages or anything taped, hard plastic clamshell cases, quick trimming around things my son is going to cut out with scissors, opening action figure packages, slitting the top of pet food bags, slicing through food packaging. you name it. I will reliably only cut one layer, but that's what I want! I don't want to always find the plastic cutting board used for paper which is *supposed* to live under the computer keyboard, but always seems to go 'walkies.' I just shove a piece of scrap paper under and slice. It seems as sharp as when I got it. It's great. Apparently some folk's mileage varies, but I'm happy.

I usually clip my coupons with scissors and saw this product as an effective way to clip/cut through the paper to get the coupons out quicker. It reminds me of a cutter blade that you would use to open up boxes but with a much smaller blade. I have mixed feelings about this product since you need something underneath the paper while using it. It will slice through the paper and whatever else is underneath it so if you put it directly under a table it can damage it if you are pressing hard to cut through to the coupon. I don't always reach for this to cut the coupons since I find the scissors work just as easily but not necessarily quicker. This is a gimmicky gadget that is not really necessary to have but useful for its purpose of clipping coupons. I don't really need it but it comes in handy to clip the coupons.

This cutter is intended for opening of plastic clamshell packages, and it does that quite well. From the sales literature, it was not clear how it works, but it turns out to be simple: There is a tiny ceramic blade protruding downward from the narrow (left in the photo) side of the body. When one presses the body down on a clamshell surface and moves to the right, the little blade cuts through the clamshell plastic, but is too short to penetrate much beyond the clamshell, so the product within is spared.

While exposed, the little blade is not a danger to fingers, probably because flesh is much more flexible than clamshell plastic, and is simply pushed aside if one should touch the blade. Anyway, I suffered no wounds.

This was recommended by friends. We have tried 10 of these at work. They were un-usable after 2 weeks, as the nearly invisible blade gets pushed up into the holder. It is great at first, can cut hard plastic packaging and such. If the price were $1.00 it would be acceptable, but do not expect to get daily repetitive use from the item. Maybe once a month occasional use in an office or home, not the real working world. Ceramic IS the new wave for cutting applications, but they need to improve the durability of this tool.
