Editorial Reviews

Review

Quality Teaching in a Culture of Coaching is an exemplary resource for any school district whose goal is to establish a common language that can be used by mentors, administrators and coaches. Steve Barkley provides practical coaching models that are grounded in research, and he provides real examples that can be adapted to any school. The Career in Teaching Program of the Rochester City School District has included this book as a "must read" by all mentors in the program. (Marie Costanza )

This book is a must for any educator striving to make positive changes in student achievement! Steve Barkley provides the best practical approaches for educators to view student behaviors as they relate to the strategies teachers are implementing in the classroom. This book outlines how increased collaboration through ongoing coaching is critical for improving student achievement and refining the skills of every teacher. (Diane Ray )

As the consummate practitioner he is, Stephen Barkley has worked tirelessly for twenty-five years, long before it became popular, to educate so many others about the immense power of teachers coaching their peers so that all students learn. His accessible language, his practical and immediately useful strategies, and his inspiring stories make this book the single most important resource for any school or school system caring about their 'culture' of coaching. (Denny Berry )

Stephen Barkley's book on coaching was one of the first I read when we were developing our instructional coaching approach, and it remains one of my favorites. Anyone interested in improving instruction will find a lot of useful information here. (Jim Knight )

Barkley, a former classroom teacher who teaches educators and administrators in the US and internationally about effective teaching, describes the importance and use of coaching in teaching. He explains the differences between mentoring and coaching, its components, coaching skills and the three-part process, and case studies and examples of coaching programs in the US and other countries. This edition has been updated to include examples, opportunities to practice specific skills, a clearly defined coaching process, applications for different school professionals, and up-to-date anecdotes and quotes. 4.0 out of 5 stars Coaches guidebook for the new Instructional coach, November 17, 2008
When I became an instructional coach I thought it would be easy, but reality soon set in. I was unsure how best to approach my colleagues in a way that would be both helpful and non-threatening to them. I was often coming off sounding more like a know-it-all, fix-it guy, than a coach. Then I discovered this book.

Barkley will guide you through his three step coaching model that is comprised of: the pre observation conference, the observation and the post observation conference. The book provides an excellent rationale for the method and clear instructions for carrying out the method in a way that is both friendly and helpful. The agenda of the teacher who has asked for coaching is always in the forefront with the method.

After incorporating Barkley's techniques into my own practice, it did not take long to have people coming to me asking for help. I was constantly busy and people were getting the help they wanted and needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and presenter!, June 1, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I actually bought this book as a "recommended title" through Amazon as a link from another book I wanted to purchase. The great news is that I ended up hearing this author speak at a teacher's conference a month or so later, and he was an EXCELLENT speaker to go along with the helpful content in his book. Must have book if you are in any way researching, working with, or in a coaching position in education.
