4.0 out of 5 stars The first song on this album is amazing., March 16, 2003

This review is from: Qualquer Coisa (Audio CD)
The first song on this album justifies its purchase singlehandedly, it being one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard. It is a perfect song for the type of song it is and easily the best song on the album.

That said I only gave this 4 stars because it is by no means a masterpiece even though many of the songs are great in their quiet way. The Beatles covers aren't as bad as you might read elsewhere, only dissapointing because they take up space where Caetano could be writing his own stuff or interpreting more Brazilian songs. It truly feels like they stand out as lesser then the other tracks in some way, so that the album feels much shorter than it is.

I would buy the album, and the song "Qualquer Coisa" is now one of my absolute favorite songs by Caetano, but as a complete work, you'll probably find more pleasure in Joia which was made at the same time, and is truly a minimalist masterpiece of quiet earthy beauty. Also I think "Cinema Trancendental" is more satifying, but it is a matter of preference, and this album has been growing on me as the weather gets warmer (Caetano albums mysteriously gain strength, power, and beauty as they get closer to the Equator and are exposed to sun and moonlight). "Livro" is also essential and I loved "Noites do Norte", it was my gateway to Caetano's music.
