4.0 out of 5 stars Grim..., November 8, 2009
This review is from: Quantos Possunt Ad Satanitatem Trahunt (Audio CD)
Not much to add to the other reviews (Robert Thompson very ably dissected the album piece-by-piece) other than my opinion of the sound. GRIM. I am from the Pest camp...while not disliking Gaahl's vocals, I much prefer Pest's...more vicious and less pretentious-sounding. And he is in great form on this new one, even managing to add a bit of clean singing in "Satan-Prometheus", which may strike some as Emperor-esque, if one was unfamiliar with Pest's work in Obtained Enslavement("Shepherd...Hell"=EXCELLENT album...if you like this Gorgoroth, seek it out!) The drums are kind've hit and miss; they are never ineffectual, but rarely astonishing. There is a welcome resurgence of Infernus' patented Gorgoroth Guitar Gashing that seems to have been missing or half-hearted since "Destroyer"...to my ears, he treats us to some VERY vintage-sounding riffs and playing, but with a more modern production and more matured ability...there is no out-of-control chainsaw frenzy like in the early days, but there is much more "action" than the rather mono-dimensional recent albums offered. There are as many cool riffs on here as on old Gorgoroth albums, as well as several drawn-out selections/passages that actually add to the feel of the album rather than getting tiresome (a fine line, indeed). There are definitely some riffs on here that will have longtime Gorgoroth fans cackling with wicked glee! The production is perhaps a bit too cold or thin, but just a bit...the impactive parts hit you like a semi-sharp sword, rather than a spiked sledgehammer. But they DO hit you. The overall feeling of this album is ferocious and GRIM, there aren't any nigh-goofy/cheerful parts on it like we've gotten in the past, and thankfully hardly any "experimental" crap(again, like we've had to ENDURE in the past)...closest thing is the brief intro to track 4 and the final track, which is less than a minute long and actually creepy sounding/effective. Out of all Gorgoroth's albums, I'd only give "Under The Sign of Hell" 5 stars, if that puts it in any perspective for ya. A VERY worthy "Rebirth"(one of the song titles). PLUS, IT COMES WITH A BITCHIN' SEW-ON PATCH(of the album's grim cover)...FREE!(don't know if this is in all versions or is only limited to first pressing or what?)

Simply the "BEST" Gorgoroth album since under the sign, play it loud the riffs will rip your face off.

This album brings Gorgoroth back to their metal throne. This is one of the best black metal albums I have heard this year with other greats such as All Shall Fall. Awesome riffs, inspired songs, great musicianship and way better vocals, pest is awesome as Gorgoroth's vocalist, he always has been. This is the new/old Gorgoroth back in the saddle. Hail Infernus!
