An Absolute Must NOT Buy, May 12, 2003
This review is from: Quantum Fighterpad Controller (Video Game)
The whole point of a six button controller like the Quantum Fighter pad is to give players of Capcom fighting games which use a six button layout 6 buttons, instead of 4 buttons with 2 triggers or shoulder buttons. The problem with shoulder buttons is the action of pressing them with your index finger forces your thumb to pull away from the D-pad, making special moves very hard to pull off. Well, the 2 extra buttons on the Quantum pad, instead of performing the action of the shoulder buttons, perform the action of the A and X buttons, which acomplishes absolutely nothing. Furthermore, the shoulder buttons on the Quantum are big, and take a long time to push, hindering your timing on special moves even more. I'm returning mine immediately. If you want a 6 button pad, go with a Madcatz or an Ascii!

This controller is one of the worst controllers released for any platform ever. But let's start with the good things first. This controller has a very intricate programming feature, as you can pre-set complicated button combinations without much trouble what so ever. There's also an option to re-map a button, i.e. you can map Y to do the function of A and so on. Also included is an auto-fire feature, which you'll hardly ever use unless you're trying to score a cheap win in a fighting game. Now to the bad. First off, this controller is huge in size. The side grips are so thick that you'll hate it from the moment you pick it up and try to play! The standard Sega controller was big, but this thing is atrocious. But the bad things don't stop there. There are 6 digital buttons on the face, 2 more than the standard Sega pad, but since they can't be re-mapped to do the function of the analog triggers they're deemed worthless. The analog stick is constructed of cheap plastic, and it doesn't strike me as having a long life-span. The other buttons are also constructed of rather cheap plastic, giving the controller a very cheap feel for the price tag. The bottom line is that this controller has some great features, but the sheer size and the low production values bring this way down. FINAL GRADE : D

All six topside buttons (ABC XYZ) are indeed programmable. Virtually any combination of cross-pad presses and ABXY can be programmed into these six buttons without a lot of hassle. But be warned-- the six buttons are smaller and closer together than the four on the standard Dreamcast controller, and are not color-coded. In addition, the LR triggers cannot be programmed nor can LR trigger presses be programmed into a button! 6-button Street Fighter-type game players will still have to reach for those triggers if they need to use all six punches and kicks (though C and Z -can- be programmed to hit two of ABXY together, which can be useful).

I have no complaints about the functionality of the controller. As a game control, it works great. However it's not comfortable to hold. It is bulky and awkward.

This controller could have been better, the control on it is flimsy and it is actually better to use the normal Dreamcast pad. Now if only they could replicate the awesome 1st generation Saturn pad for Dreamcast.......

Great control for a controller, December 9, 2000

Compared to the controller that comes with the Dreamcast console, this is so much better. A word of advice: If you have short, thick fingers and small hands this is going to be the best controller for you because the buttons are actually reachable (they are closer to the edge of the controller) than the standard controller. If you have long fingers and big hands, stick with the standard controller. If you don't like the feel of a more substantial controller like the Quantum (it is heaver and thicker than standard), than don't get it because you will have a greater chance of hand fatigue. The main reason I got it and love it is because my hands are thick, small and my fingers are short. For fighting games and games involving pressing more than one button at a time, the standard controllers was nearly impossible for me to master. The Quantum gave me more control over my moves, plus 2 extra buttons are great for games such as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Dead or Alive 2. For people who complain about the analog thumb stick, those are people who are WAY too rough on it and simply need to loosen up. With that said, if you are "heavy thumbed", then actually the Quantum stick is more substantial than the standard controller. And by the way, anything these days is made out of "cheap plastic" if they weren't then we would be paying a heck of a lot more than we are now!

My niece's future husband has taken three of these back because they continue to fall apart. He eventually decided to stick with the Sega brand. I played with one before it broke (on the second day he had it) and it was pretty good when used playing Soul Calibur, but on other games it seemed a little awkward. I would advise you to go with the Sega controller. Better quality and a better feel.

Pretty good controller overall..., July 2, 2001
This review is from: Quantum Fighterpad Controller (Video Game)
This controller is nice, but there are a few things that could be better. First of all, the two extra buttons (Z and C) are scrunched together next to the four standard buttons. Therefore, it makes it a little confusing to distinguish which buttons, and a lot of times, you end up hitting the wrong ones. The programmable feature is easy and user-friendly; it is done all on the controller with a lot of flexibility. The only dissapointment is that you can't program the triggers. The trigger work fine with fighting and adventure games, but with racing games, where you have to hold the right trigger the whole time, your finger can get a bit numb after a few minutes. Actually, the triggers are more like buttons than triggers. They don't curve in like the standard Dreamcast controller. Instead, they push in. With the normal Dreamcast controller, the cord comes from the bottom, which can be a little annoying at times. This cord comes from the top near the memory card and TremorPak slots. And just to warn you, in the photos in Amazon, and even on the box itself, the controller looks silver. When mine came, it was just beige. I'm not sure if the photos are just a trick of light, or if they make two different colors that come randomly. So, this controller is pretty nice overall. But if you are going to be mostly playing racing games, this controller is probably not for you. If the controller didn't have any of the programmability or the auto-fire, I definitely wouldn't have bought it.

Limitations make it useless, July 16, 2001
This review is from: Quantum Fighterpad Controller (Video Game)
Since you can't program the top buttons to act like the trigger buttons, you can't achieve the true 6-button layout, and that destroys the purpose of having a controller like this. I'm returning mine tomorrow.

DESPITE WHAT OTHERS MAY SAY, THE CONTROLLER WAS ENGINEERED., December 2, 1999

THE CONTROLLER WAS ENGINEERED FOR FIGHTING STYLE GAMERS LIKE ME, THEREFORE I RECOMMEND THAT YOU ONLY USE IT FOR 3D AND 2D FIGHTING GAMES. THE CONTROL PAD IS VERY BASIC AND A LITTLE INACCURATE AT SOME TIMES, YET THE PAD CAN BECOME ALITTLE ANNOYING AS IT IS DESIGNED VERY AWKWARDLY. I MYSELF PREFER ONLY THIS CONTROL PAD FOR JUST FIGHTING GAMES BASICALLY, BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PLAY FIGHTING GAMES WITH IT, YET I PREFER SO. USING THE CONTROL PAD FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, MAY CAUSE SOME SLIGHT PAIN OR FATIGUE IN YOUR HANDS, THE CONTROLLER IS PRETTY HARD AND YOU SHOULD ONLY BUY THIS CONTROLLER IF YOU ARE USE TO HARD FIGHTING STYLE CONTROL PADS LIKE ME. OVERALL, IT IS A WELL BUILT CONTROLLER FOR THE 1st GENERATION OF FIGHTING GAMES OUT FOR THE DREAMCAST RIGHT NOW, CONSEQUENTLY THE PAD COULD OF BEEN BETTER WITH PRECISION AND ACCURACY, BUT IT MAKES UP FOR FUNCTION PURPOSES AND QUALIFIED ARRANGEMENT OF RESPONSIVENESS.
