Pulling the Pieces Together,
By Dean Robinson (US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Quantum Kenpo: Pulling the Pieces Together (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is one of my favorites. Lee outlines the learning process of Kenpo Karate. Each chapter teaches the needs and benefits of learning the priciples of this Art as well as some of the concepts. After he takes you through this learning process, Lee pulls all the pieces back together. I've applied a great deal of this book to all my techniques and find it a necessity to all series Kenpo students. Being a 5th Degree Black Belt in Kenpo I highly recommend this book to everyone.

The ABC's of Kenpo Karate,
This review is from: Quantum Kenpo: Pulling the Pieces Together (Mass Market Paperback)
The body cannot initiate or complete any action unless the mind can first conceive the action and execute it. The repetitive movement of the body during practice of a kick or punch does not train the body, but serves to give the mind feedback as to how accurately and effectively it has accomplished the intended movement. Yet such rote learning is like a young child memorizing his ABC's. Lee Bachman's school of Kenpo goes far beyond this, teaching that, just as letters and words flow freely in speech to form a cohesive discourse, individual moves and techniques can be put together in an almost limitless number of smooth and concise sequences, each one suited for a unique situation.Mr. Bachman's goal in teaching Kenpo is to bring the Martial Arts student to the point where he interacts with his opponent at the highest level of thought before taking action. Blocks and strikes flow together naturally into words and sentences which accurately and effectively meet the specific confrontation, and which are executed without conscious awareness of individual punches and kicks. In Quantum Kenpo "Pulling the Pieces Together", Lee Bachman motivates the enlightened Kenpo student to think logically, to analyze and apply the precepts of physics and human anatomy to self defense. He challenges the student to "never stop looking" at what he is doing, at why he is doing it, and at how he could do it better. This book does not teach any single punch, block, or kick. It teaches all of them together.

I pick up a little more each time I read it...,

Quantum Kenpo: Pulling the Pieces Together - ISBN 0-9652672-3-7 By Lee Bachman There aren't a lot of graphics in Quantum Kenpo. The diagrams that are present are basic and serve to clarify particular points. The principles he covers are sound and do as he says, work on "pulling the pieces together". He breaks the book down into 1) Laying the Groundwork, 2) Motion, 3) Theories, 4) Nature of the Art and 5) Closing Notes. You can tell this book is written by a person who loves Kenpo. He touches on a lot of different points. He doesn't go into great depth on any one topic, but gives an overview of many. He touches on points just enough that if you have a strong backgound in Kenpo then you can understand exactly what he's talking about and can solidify those concepts or if you don't know that much you want to learn more. I feel like I walked away with another way of looking at Kenpo concepts when I finished this book and as I look over it again almost a year later I can actually appreciate it that much more. Give it a shot.
