Is That You, Al Calavicci??,
By SwiftHeart@v-wave.com (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews

I must say, I was deeply disappointed in this book. First of all, it starts out with all these petty little fights between Sam and Al. Sam is a crab throughout the entire novel. And Al's character was totally wrecked. It was swear after swear after swear. The plot was rather drawn out, and the only thing I really enjoyed about the book was the background on Donna Alessi and Sam Beckett. The author really got in touch with her feelings & thoughts about Sam and the project. But I wouldn't rush out and buy this one. Try "Foreknowledge" or "Angels Unaware" first.

Don't bother with this one.,

The author of this book created totally different characters to the names of Sam and Al. Sam was uncharacteristically dirty minded and grumpy and Al was unusually violent and cold. The history of Sam's and Donna's romance was good, but again, a little questionable in content. The book used unnecessary dirty words and actions to get points across. It was a waste of time to read.

Entertaining read for a casual fan of the series,

When I read this book, it had been years since I'd seen very much of the TV series, but it brought to mind some of what I loved about the show. The plot twists in this book are very well-executed, and left me an extremely satisfied reader. Some hardcore fans of the show seem to be arguing that the characterizations in this novel are not true to the ones from the TV show. There were a couple moments where I did find myself questioning the writer's intent in that regard, but these were few and far between. This book also gives a great insight into some of the goings-on in the "present day" of the show Quantum Leap. Good stuff!

Not so good,

I don't even want to think how long it took for me to force myself to read this - I can't leave a book unfinished. As far as staying true to the Sam and Al presented in the series - this one misses the boat by a mile. Sam was irritated and irritable; petulant and whiny and just not a nice guy and couldn't seem to get sex off of his mind. Al was just a complete...well, politeness prevents me from completing the thought. When I first started to read my knee-jerk reaction was that it sounded so much like fan fiction - you know that stuff that people who aren't authors but want to be authors write about their favorite TV shows and then put on line but somehow never really seem to capture the character they're writing about. That's what this reminded me of. I've since found out from a friend that, low and behold, this same author has done just that - written Quantum Leap fan fiction. It really shows in the quality of this writing and leaves me wondering why it ever got published. If you're looking for a good QL book to read, I suggest you hunt down "Knights of the Morningstar" by Melanie Rawn. Now there's an author who didn't feel the need to change Sam and Al just to suit what she wanted Sam and Al to be.

A friend found out I liked Quantum Leap and gave me this since she had it lying around her house. I told her next time not to do me any favors. The only good thing I can say is that at least I didn't have to shell out any money for this.
I have no idea if the author was very familiar or not with Quantum Leap before writing this but it doesn't seem that way to me. All the magic of the TV show is just sucked out of this book. Sam's a egotistical and whining and frankly I didn't care if he succeeded at his mission or not. Way too much attention is paid to what's going on at the project and the whole problem there. Frankly I think the one episode that had Sam married was a huge mistake so the last thing I needed was for someone to keep on expounding on how that relationship came to be. I really don't care what Donna Elesse is doing back at the project nor did I care for the "original character" that had a feel like I should have read something before this to be familiar with them. Sorry, but I watched Quantum Leap to see what Sam was going to be up to - not to watch Al bully and beat up people. I see the same author wrote another Quantum Leap book, "Mirror's Edge", as well. I'll make sure I give that one a wide berth. If you're looking for a good Quantum Leap book I suggest you try to hunt down "Pulitzer", "Angels Among Us", or "Knights of the Morning Star."

Brilliant Piece of Work,
By
This review is from: Quantum Leap 13: Obsessions (Paperback)
This book is amazing. It ranks as one of the best Quantum Leap novels in my opinion. If you like Quantum Leap, you'll love this! For once, it doesn't focus primarily on Sam but gives some inside information on the other people at Project Quantum Leap. Al is absolutely brilliant, having to deal with what's happening in his time but trying to keep it all from Sam. The characters are spot on and it's actually nice to know that Sam isn't always up-beat and goody, goody all the time, he does have a darker side! It's a shame that Quantum Leap novels aren't being done anymore because I think this author would have produced some good ones.

A great QL book!,

This author has given us a look at Sam and Donna's history, which is a part of Sam's past and his future. The television series addressed this subject only briefly. The author gives us a connection to Donna snd her role in Sam's life. It is a wonderfully written book, well worth the time to read it!

One of the best!,

This book has everything I look for in a Quantum Leap novel. It has an interesting and gripping story, with a twist at the end that, even if it may not be entirely new, is still very entertaining. But what I like even better is how the author manages to provide us with a lot of background for the main characters - Sam, Al, and Donna - throughout the book. We really get into their minds and learn more about their relationships and their motivations, with their characterizations all the while in perfect keeping with the characters as we know them from the TV show. And it is written in a style that I find very entertaining, and so captivating that it was difficult for me to put the book down, even at the second reading. All these ingredients put together make this book one of my favorite QL novels.

I'd Give It A Pass,
By Redhill "Redhill" (Eastern USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Quantum Leap 13: Obsessions (Paperback)
I'm not sure what characters the author was writing about but I don't think it's the Sam and Al that was created by Don Bellisario in the TV series Quanutm Leap. I understand that different people can see and interpret different characters in different ways but this takes that thought to the utter extreme. These characters couldn't have been more different. Not only were they different, they weren't likeable at all.
If you're looking to read a QL novel that'll remind you of the tv series, this one isn't it.

Great Backstory,
By Carol (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Quantum Leap 13: Obsessions (Paperback)
This is a well-crafted book that gives you a look at what it must be like for Donna back at the Project while Sam is leaping about. We also see how frustrated Sam might become at times, especially when he feels abandoned by Al (who is up to his eyeballs with a threat to the Project). This is a darker version of Sam, but it is a legitimate aspect of his personality to be explored.
