Book Description

1577663217 978-1577663218 December 2003 2
In an effort to excite college seniors and first-year graduate students about the essence of quantum mechanics, Goswami always begins a topic with what students know before moving into more complex areas. He teaches students how to ask the right questions, satisfying their interest in the meaning and interpretation of quantum mechanics, and treats the nitty-gritty details carefully. The unifying approach of the book presents quantum mechanics not only as a schema for successful calculations and predictions but also as a basis for a new and exciting worldview. The most unusual aspect of the book is an ongoing presentation of the radicalness of quantum mechanics as compared to classical physics. Outstanding features: 1) gives a thorough grounding in the fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics; 2) provides a wealth of worked-out examples; 3) offers a balanced presentation of quantum system, which helps students make a bridge to whichever aspect of modern physics they want to pursue; 4) goes into enough depth without exceeding the mathematical level of the beginning student; and 5) liberates physics students from the bonds of classical prejudices.

More About the Author

Amit Goswami, Ph. D. is a professor of physics (retired) at the University of Oregon, Eugene, OR where he has served since 1968. He is a pioneer of the new paradigm of science called science within consciousness an idea he explicated in his seminal book, The Self-Aware Universe where he also solved the quantum measurement problem elucidating the famous observer effect.

Goswami has written six other popular books based on his research on quantum physics and consciousness. In The Visionary Window, Goswami demonstrated how science and spirituality could be integrated. In Physics of the Soul he developed a theory of survival after death and reincarnation. His book Quantum Creativity is a tour de force instruction about how to engage in both outer and inner creativity. Goswami's book, The Quantum Doctor integrates conventional and alternative medicine. His latest book, Creative Evolution is a resolution between Darwinism and intelligent design of life. Finally, in his book God is not Dead, Goswami demonstrates science's re-discovery of God.

Goswami's books have been translated in nine languages.

In his private life, Goswami is a practitioner of spirituality and transformation. He calls himself a quantum activist. He was featured in the film "What the Bleep Do We Know?" and its sequel "Down the rabbit hole" and in the documentary "Dalai Lama Renaissance" and the award winning "The Quantum Activist."

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD TEXT, November 5, 2006
This review is from: Quantum Mechanics (Hardcover)
Had this text for an Intro to QM course - not a good choice for the "Intro" part. Goswami covers all the bases but his organization of material seems a little discombobulated. I can see this text being reasonable for a second QM course, but not as an intro. Griffiths or Liboff is better for this purpose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intermediate Level QM Book, May 24, 2001

David Dreisigmeyer (Fort Collins, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Quantum Mechanics (Hardcover)
This is a fairly complete treatment of QM. The only downside is that it is somewhat too advanced for an intro to the subject, but not rigorous enough for an advanced treatment. However, I used this book as a "backup" to Sakurai in a graduate level QM course. In that role it was flawless. It could also be used as a supplement to Griffith's QM book (which is extremely good but has some logical/mathematical flaws). In this case it would be serving as an "advanced" introduction.

1.0 out of 5 stars An awful text for learning quantum mechanics., May 20, 2011
By
This review is from: Quantum Mechanics (Hardcover)
For some unknown reason, my undergraduate institution used Goswami's quantum mechanics text instead of the plethora of other quality texts everyone else seems to use (e.g. Griffith's Introduction to Quantum Mechanics). Quantum mechanics is a difficult subject to "get" anyway, even with a good text, but it was practically impossible to make sense of with Goswami's book. Fortunately, the professor who taught the first semester of QM was good, so there was really no need to refer to the textbook. However, the professor who taught the second semester course was atrocious, and all of us students were left trying to learn the material by reading Goswami's book (as well as any other texts we could get our hands on). Needless to say, I got very little out of second semester QM except a hard-earned B (the only B I got that semester).

I'm entering grad school this fall and am spending the summer trying to master all that undergraduate QM. I didn't realize just how bad Goswami's book was until I picked up Griffith's text for review, as well some others (e.g. Greiner, Liboff, and Sakurai). All that material I thought was inconceivably hard as an undergrad seems downright easy now...that is, after I started reading these other QM books.

If you're new to QM, do yourself a favor and avoid Goswami's book at all cost. There are so many GOOD alternatives; pick one of those instead.
