Book Description

047116433X 978-0471164333 June 1978 1st
This didactically unrivalled textbook and timeless reference by Nobel Prize Laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji separates essential underlying principles of quantum mechanics from specific applications and practical examples and deals with each of them in a different section. Chapters emphasize principles; complementary sections supply applications. The book provides a qualitative introduction to quantum mechanical ideas; a systematic, complete and elaborate presentation of all the mathematical tools and postulates needed, including a discussion of their physical content and applications.
The book is recommended on a regular basis by lecturers of undergraduate courses.

About the Author

Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, born in Constantine (Algeria) in 1933, studied at the ?cole Normale Sup?rieure in Paris, where he received a postdoctoral lecture qualification in 1962. In 1973 he was accepted at the Coll?ge de France, and in 1981 became a member of the Academy of Sciences. In 1997, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on laser cooling of neutral atoms (together with Steven Chu and William D. Phillips). The method is relevant for the development of precise atomic clocks, which are used for positioning and navigation. His is currently affiliated to the Laboratoire de Physique at the ?cole Normale Sup?rieure.
His textbook on quantum mechanics, written together with Bernard Diu und Franck Lalo?, is one of the best-known timeless standard references in this field and is recommended on a regular basis by lecturers of undergraduate courses.

5.0 out of 5 stars As complete as a book on QM can get, January 24, 2000
By
This review is from: Quantum Mechanics, Vol. 1 (Volume 1) (Paperback)
This book starts from scratch and works through every aspects of QM someone who studies QM is supposed to know. My advice would be to read every single line of this book, including the small print explanations and the complements. You'll be amazed at what you'll learn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great pedagogical text full with examples, September 6, 1998
This review is from: Quantum Mechanics, Vol. 1 (Volume 1) (Paperback)
A complete introduction of QM full of explainations and examples. Even though it might seem verbose to some advanced readers, it is well suited for the introductory level. The only drawback might be the organization which often requires you to do a lot of page-flipping ie."refer to equation 13 in complement H and example 4 in section 2 of chapter 8".

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST (and the most expensive), December 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Quantum Mechanics, Vol. 1 (Volume 1) (Paperback)
This is, in my opinion, the best introductory book on non-relativistic quantum mechanics. It starts from the very basics, either on physical or mathematical aspects. It has a wonderful collection of worked out problems where one can really understand the lectures. It's also a great reference.

I just can't figure out Why it is so expensive. I believe I bought it 2 years ago by half the price. (First-hand). Anyway, a must have for every Physics student.
