Product Description

The lab rats at area 51 are always looking for new applications for the alien technology being brought back to Earth by Stargate Command. Their latest innovation - the Stargate Coaster - is a miniaturized startgate with its event horizon permanently fixed in place, resulting in the perfect solution for keeping your hot or cold drinks from damaging table surfaces. A problem we could only solve through alien technology.

The Stargate Coaster Set comes with four mini-stargates each measuring 4.75â? across. The stargate design is exactly screen accurate - taken directly from the CGI files used on the show. Each glyph and chevron is perfectly reproduced in resin with a detailed paint job and weathering. The event horizon is semi-transparent, blue with rippled surface, just like the big gates.

So set your drinks aside in style with your own set of Stargate Coasters!

Pros:
Coaster looks pretty cool.
The worm hole is completely transparent and appears to be made of pretty solid plastic- so there is no concern that you might shatter it by placing something on it.
The gate itself is pretty solid resin.
There is a felt backing behind the gate so that it sits without sliding whatever surface you decide to place it on.

Cons:
The worm hole is a little curved, like a lens, so the cup doesn't sit as solidly on it as one would expect. But again, it's no cause for concern. Your cup isn't suddenly going to slide off and tip over.

I never thought I would buy any coasters (or a set) in my entire life, but being a big fan of the Stargate series I couldn't resist! As far as the quality, design, etc of these coasters I'll put it this way:

Pros:
> QMx used the actual CGI files to recreate the stargate for these coasters -- detail is great on everything!
> Quality of the coaster is good
> Great conversation piece, and one of a kind coaster set. It will look cool to people who know nothing about Stargate.

Cons
> I'm concerned with the area where the blue event horizon meets the gate. It could have been constructed better. Could potentially (down the road) lead to condensation leaking from the glass/cup to the table.
> Blue event horizon is somewhat slippery, so be careful with certain types of cups/mugs

Overall:

This coaster set (4 coasters in all) is a great way to enjoy Stargate in another fashion, while being fashionable. They have excellent detailing, and look very realistic compared to the show/movie. If you're on the edge about these (as I was due to the lack of reviews)... GO FOR IT. In the end, they are worth it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Looks Great, Works Only So-So, December 19, 2010
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars

These coasters looks and feel fantastic, but they are not good for drinks that are particularly damp. Lots of condensation or cardboard cups that slowly leak overnight reveal that these coasters are not watertight. When liquid sits long enough in these coasters, they find the little nooks in the bottom, saturate the felt, which then stains whatever it's sitting on. This results in gray rings on surfaces that can be difficult to remove.

It may be possible to seal the crevices before use with silicone or hot glue, but I haven't tried this yet. So beware, these coasters only protect against minimal amounts of liquid.
