Book Description

January 10, 1997
'The Quantum Tai Chi' explores a new interpretation of Quantum Theory involving the brain and consciousness which asserts that we are free to choose our world. It begins with a thorough review of Nobel laureate Chen Nin Yang's Gauge Theory of Physics, comparing it to Chinese Tai Chi Philosophy. Non-linear time is discussed. It ends with a daring Gauge Theory of Consciousness, and gives explanations for Karl Jung's synchronicity, paranormal phenomena, Self-Realization, and spontaneous healing. Jung and Yang, yin and yang are themes of this revolutionary book.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A fascinating theme developed in a clear and at the same time amazing way." -- Manuel Montes, The Science Book Board

"This book will stand as the next step toward understanding quantum theory. It could be considered the sequel to the 'Tao of Physics' and the 'Dancing Wu Li Masters'" -- Narada Moy, Phd, physics

From the Author

Quantum Theory is a miracle among scientific theories. It has allowed us to understand the mysterious 'fingerprints' of the elements, the line spectra which provide the identity of elements in the most distant galaxies. It has given us the key to the standard theory of the most basic particles which physicists envision to make up all of matter: quarks and leptons. It has launched us into a program to mold the four forces of physics into one force which will describe everything in the physical world. It is without a doubt the most precise theory of science, giving us physical constants accurate to fifteen decimal places in the theory of the electron and its interactions.

For all its accomplishments, however, the interpretation of Quantum Theory is still a mystery. Perhaps the theory is incomplete. We do not know how it is, for example, that before an electron jumps to a lower orbit in an atom to give off a quantum or 'bundle' of light, it only has a probability of doing so in a given length of time. We are unable to predict the timing of this 'quantum leap', as it is called. To Albert Einstein, this was unacceptable. When he said that "God does not play dice with the universe," he was implying that behind the rules of probability governing the behavior of the atom is some physical scheme which makes common sense.

Let us call this physical scheme "God's wheel of fortune" for the sake of argument. Perhaps at each moment a wheel is turned to decide whether the atom emits light or not. This wheel could have stops which say 'emit' or 'not emit' in proportions which relate to the probability involved. The omnipotence of God allows that he or she is able to readjust the balance of stops in an instant to match changing circumstances and probabilities.

Though such a setup obviously has no scientific basis, might there be one that does? Rather than relying on a very busy 'God', might the resolution of the mystery lie within the human brain, mind, or consciousness? And if it does, might such a scheme unravel the mystery of consciousness, human behavior, and the nature of the physical world?

'The Quantum Tai Chi' gives answers to these questions and more.

More About the Author

Dr. Philip Petersen is currently a tenured professor of Astronomy and Physics at Solano College in California, having taught at Montana State University and Utah State University. Though Astrophysics was the emphasis of his PhD from UC San Diego in 1987, he has always had a passion for Quantum Theory and its interpretation.

This passion played out in a book published by Empyrean Quest Publishers in 1996: The Quantum Tai Chi--Gauge Theory: The Dance of Mind over Matter. It outlined a new quantum theory of karma and responsibility. The reviews were glowing, including Midwest Book Review, Analogue Science Fiction and Fact Magazine, and Maxwell Montez of the Science Book Board.

His online Cosmology text, Cosmic Acceleration: Hounding the White Whale of Cosmology was number one on Google under 'Cosmology Book' for several years, and still remains toward the top. His scientific writing captures the imagination and forces the reader to think out of the box of societal science.

His latest book, The Quantum Shield: Protecting Your Life from Negative Thoughts and Feelings, explores the analogy of consciousness to quantum entanglement. Staying in a state of joy shields us against the negative thoughts and feelings from others and our subconscious.

2.0 out of 5 stars Confused theoretical physics with unsbubstantiated claims, July 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Quantum Tai Chi (Gauge Theory: The Dance Of Mind Over Matter) (Paperback)
The author spends 148 of 188 pages in an overambitious attempt to describe the body of knowledge in particle physics into a non-mathematical snynopsis of the current thought in theoretical physics. The attempt is fragmented and strewn with analogies to Tai-Chi and "gauge," the terms are poorly and differentially defined according to the author's needs. That is , the definitions are neither internally consistent throughout the text, nor readily understandable. Although my interest was sustained through the explanations of various theorems, very little was done to convince the reader that the theorems are only superficially related to Taoism or other Buddhist thoughts. The author goes awry starting on page 149, with a pseudo-scientific theory of brain activity, neuronal actions and consciousness without reference to anything known in Neurobiology other than "microtubules." He coninues with an analysis of Jungian psychology, in which he believes, but the majority of academic psychiatrists & psychologists still scorn. The reader is frustrated after carefully reading a great deal of physics only to be led on to the last quarter of the book, which contains nothing more than unsubstantiated claims, insights and pure delusion. Skip it and read the "Tao of Physics" for a more intelligent and academic look for the paralells between eastern philosphy and theoretical physics.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting, educational book on a complex subject., October 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Quantum Tai Chi (Gauge Theory: The Dance Of Mind Over Matter) (Paperback)
It is a great pleasure to read Dr. Philip Petersen's book "The Quantum Tai Chi" which explains the mystery of quantum physics and its connection with consciousness. It is a joy to see such a difficult subject so well explained with many common analogies. Nobody has ever done as much as Dr.Petersen to place Quantum theory within the grasp of common man. He uses his unequaled gifts to explain -understandable problems and makes them easily graspable. This smooth flowing, highly readable book is for everyone interested in Quantum Physics. It provides an intellectually stimulating, provocative, and gripping explanation of the subject with incontrovertible evidence. Petersen has taken the most complex victuals and made it a delicious desert. It is written with far-sightedness, imagination, thought and inspiration to make everyone think. To read it is to be engaged in a cerebral tennis contest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quantum Theory and the Metaphysical Principle, January 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Quantum Tai Chi (Gauge Theory: The Dance Of Mind Over Matter) (Paperback)
This book does two important things. 1) It demonstrates the mathematical plausibility of the metaphysical principle that each individual creates their universe. This is derived from a new interpretation of quantum theory which is based solely on the nature of superconductivity theory and Pearle's interpretation of quantum theory. If as Philip Pearle, physicist, has suggested, the quantum gauge angle may be chosen randomly to collapse the wave function, then superconductivity suggests how that is accomplished--without adding to the quantum theory as it stands. This implies that a field of gauge angles exists in consciousness--this is the 'field of infinite possibilities' as described by Depak Chopra. We then, in principle are free to choose among them. 2) It also suggests that a theory of karmic cycles may be built upon Quantum Gauge Theory. This mathematical theory is based on a gauge potential cyclic in time. This is the Quantum Tai Chi proposal.

For these reasons the book presents a significant but radical advance in understanding human consciousness and how it relates to Quantum Theory.
