There is nothing really wrong with this book, but then, there was nothing really inspiring about it either. To me it was just ok. I read it on a recommendation from a friend who loved it, so I suppose some may love it. I just found all of the information to be a bit common sense. Body-mind-spirit, and , most recently--environment (eco-friendly) is the new mantra to living a full and complete and healthy life, as shown in Quantum Wellness and dozens of other new and not so new books. This is a good thing--seeing books on personal transformation extend beyond the self and into caring for the environment and all its inhabitants.

The way we think, feel and act is interconnected with the planet and the animals--with all of life. For example, Kathy Freston supports vegan diets (or at the very least vegetarian) not only because of the health benefits of a meat-free diet, but because eating most meat available in this country means eating animals that have been treated inhumanely. Additionally, raising animals for slaughter takes a toll on the environment.

Freston calls this conscious eating and that means that nobody is harmed by what she puts into her body.

Freston also supports using eco-friendly body care products and household cleaners--good for the environment and you.To name one of many books that support optimal health, veganism/vegetarianism and the green lifestyle is GROWING UP GREEN: BABY AND CHILD CARE.

Quantum Wellness, according to Kathy Freston, is an achievable higher state if being. Freston writes: "Quantum wellness is not about imposing big changes but about leaning into wellness, comfortably, adding things here and there to the thrust and taking baby steps toward the changes we want to achieve."

The quantum leap--or shift to quantum wellness occurs, according to Freston, as a result of many small steps. For example, Freston suggests baby steps to a more healthful diet--not meat eating one day and vegan the next.

According to Freston, there are The Eight Pillars of Wellness:

* Meditation

* Visualization

* Fun activities

* Conscious eating

* Exercise

* Self-work

* Spiritual practice

* Service

As an eco-friendly interior designer and feng shui practitioner, I was delighted to see Freston write about the importance of home in supporting our health. She tells us to remove clutter, resist buying new stuff unless we either love it or truly need it, and to use as little chemicals (cleaning products, personal care products,) as possible. This is very good advice, as the home definitely affects our well-being.

For a complete guide to greening your home (as well as making it beautiful and energetically vibrant) for optimal wellness, read the award winning book, HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET.

As previously mentioned, Freston supports veganism for optimal health. Understanding that the transition from omnivore to vegetarian can be difficult and that veganism is almost impossible for many of us to comprehend, she describes her own process and offers many helpful tips for the reader to adapt. According to Freston, living the vegan lifestyle is empowering. The book also contains vegetarian and vegan recipes to help us make the transition in our diets.

Freston covers a lot of ground in Quantum Wellness, including dealing with addictions and fears and questions to ask yourself when you aren't feeling 100%. As an extroverted person, I have a hard time with some of these sections, as I am not inclined to "look inside too often. Some people love to ask themselves questions and ponder...I either meditate or take a hike when I'm feeling sad, mad or whatever and that generally works for me. because of this, I got overwhelmed with all the suggestions of things to do to achieve perfect wellness.

On the other hand, I love that she suggests having some fun everyday.

Overall, a very good and inspirational book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerfully expansive!!!, July 13, 2009

I adore this book. It was a reassuring reminder of things I already knew and continued to inspire me to improve my life- in the most inobtrusive way. I am a vegetarian and I appreciated her chapters about a person's eating habits; these have inspired me to go vegan.

An easy to read book, it's almost as if she's in your living room just chatting with you about the subjects. For this reason, it does not feel (at all) like she is forcing these ideas down your throat- she just empowers you to start thinking about what is best for you. She sends a message that I have applied to my daily life: Progress, not perfection.

This book is worth the investment, as it can powerfully expand your life in a multitude of ways.

There is nothing really wrong with this book, but then, there was nothing really inspiring about it either. To me it was just ok. I read it on a recommendation from a friend who loved it, so I suppose some may love it. I just found all of the information to be a bit common sense. It may be because I have read similar books such as this one and many Buddhist books before, so that I had already been introduced to some of the ideas. If you haven't read any other books like this before you may like it more than I did. I was hoping this book would give me the mental willpower to go vegan (I am a vegetarian who would like to be vegan but find it hard to do) but it didn't. If you can buy it used cheaply or rent from the library it might be worth reading in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Starter Book for Making Change, April 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There are some great ideas in here about leaning into wellness to make change as a result of a accumulation of many little steps instead of one very large step. Overall, it's a good book that I'd recommend to those looking to make a change but not quite knowing where to start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting journey, March 30, 2011

This was a good book and it did get me to start thinking about where my food was coming from. I did go the full 21 days without animal products, caffeine, gluten, sugar, and alcohol. It helped me to be more creative with the food I ate. In the beginning I thought the only thing I would be able to eat was my lawn but I discovered a whole world of vegan food. Some of the food was delicious and some things (vegan cheese) did not compare to the real thing. My only complaint is that it got a little preachy about the animal rights... I love animals and even consider being vegan every now and again but I do think that there are people out there that raise their animals with love and respect and maybe she could give some of the stories about those farmers. All in all a good book and it did get me thinking which should be the goal of any good book.

As a long-time vegan, I figured I pretty much knew what this book was about. After seeing Kathy Freston on Oprah, I gave several copies as gifts and decided I should actually read the book I was recommending. I'm happy I did! Quantum Wellness is a great guide to getting out of ruts and ending unhealthy addicitions of your mind and body. She gently challenges the reader to face what isn't working in his/her life and offers ways to become well (in mind, body, and spirit) that inspire rather than overwhelm. Even if your time or resources only allow you to take one or two of the steps she suggests, it's well worth reading the whole book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book to Make Changes, January 9, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have been a vegetarian for 20 years and still have been able to find inspiration from Kathy Freston's new book. She does not make one feel guilty for the habits and/or lifestyles they are currently living. I gathered new wisdom from her book and I have already read it three times! She talks about "leaning" into a new way of life - that radical change doesn't work. Just by making small changes creates a new and better way of life.

Great book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Love the book but don't agree with many suggestions, December 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I just finished reading Quantum health and certainly got a lot out the book. Very well written and thoughtful - we all need as a people on this earth to practice the suggested mindfulness Kathy Preston writes about . However, and this is a big however, her suggestions on eating are way out in left field particularly when she suggests eating soy, junk veggie burgers and the like. The only soy anyone should eat would be fermented soy such as tempeh, miso and nato in very small amounts. Talk about junk food read some of the labels of the so called vegan processed foods in the store - yikes... as far as going vegan or vegetarian that is something we all should do either some days of the week or completely but up to the individual. The inhuman treatment of the big Corporate Animal feed lots are right on but lets support the small farmer that is working hard to supply us with good food and well treated animals. Why is it that people in this country feel it's ok to spend 40 thousand dollars on a vehicle but won't spend good money on good nutrition and support the local farmers??? In the end if I get one thing out of reading a book then it was worth the read and this book certainly gave me good information and wellness ideas.

I really enjoyed this book. It was well rounded with tips on how to reduce stress in your life. It also discusses how to live (and eat) in a way that's compassionate, good for you and good for the planet.
