Not effective for learning the program,

This review is from: QuarkXPress 8: Essential Skills for Page Layout and Web Design (Paperback)
This book is really just informational about components of QuarkXPress 8. There are very few actual hand-on assignments which would actually help you learn the program. Instead, the book just tells you what will happen based on different criteria.
I have the Against The Clock book for QuarkXPress 7 and it is extremely comprehensive. Even though it's for version 7, it is still very applicable to version 8. I recommend it instead of this book.

This is a great book for people like me who don't like to read tutorials. The layout of information allows for readibility and well organized chapters makes it easy to find what you need.
I highly recommend this book.

Just a short review (working on a 400 page book project for a customer!) I haven't used QXP since version 3.2, but had to pickup a previously made file for abovementioned customer. This book is helpful to remind me of things I had forgotten, and get me up to speed to use even V.9. However, there are some gaps, and a couple of typos/errors (including one on page 83, which talks about invisible characters and has them showing the wrong way, /p should read \p and so on.)
But all in all, I'm glad I got this book, as it's a real help in getting back up to speed on QXP.

The "QuarkXPress 8: Essential Skills for Page Layout and Web Design" is perfect for the returning Quark user. I had not used Quark for nine years, but prior to my dry spell, this program was my "everyday everything." Weeks of detailed study were ahead of me, I feared! This book has been more than enough to bring me (or any lapsed user) up to date: explaining changes, explaining usage at present, informing one of new technologies and new vocabulary within QuarkXPress 8. I was up and running in less than two days! For a person unfamiliar with Quark, this is not the book. But for those of who need a finely-tuned brush-up, a refresher course, this book has it all! I could not be more delighted!

As much as I love my Kindle (I have both 1 & 2) it just doesn't show enough detail on the graphics. Before the Kindle or similar devices are going to be of much use for manuals the resolution is going to have to get much better and if we are to be realistic it is going to have to have color.
