About the Author
Cyndie Shaffstall is editor and publisher of X-Ray Magazine. She began working in print shops and migrated to typesetting very early in her career. At the introduction of the Macintosh to the print industry in the mid-80s, Shaffstall became a corporate trainer helping print-shop professionals adopt and adapt to the Mac. She has authored or co-authored nearly a dozen books on computer software, and self-published her first, QuarkXPress: Making the Most of Your Negative Experiences. In 1995, Shaffstall founded ThePowerXChange, LLC, a software-distribution company dedicated to extensions technology. In addition to ThePowerXChange, Shaffstall is the managing member of StrappyArt, LLC, a product that she invented in 2006, and Banyan Tree Partners, LLC, a marketing-consultation company. She is also director of QuarkAlliance at Quark, Inc.

As a QuarkXPress user for two decades, I was not looking for book to tell me how to use the application, but I did want a review of QuarkXPress 8's new UI. This book provides exactly as the title touts, "production tricks and experts' tips," but if you're new to QuarkXPress in general, there are two full chapters to help you get started. In my opinion, though, intermediate and advanced users are the ones who will benefit most.
As a desktop publisher, I've never really taken to the illustration tools in QuarkXPress, but with the step-by-step tutorials on the pen tools, I was really amazed to find that I can use these pen tools to make very detailed illustrations, logos, and drop caps. That's a real benefit to me. If you already know everything, you won't need this book and a quick peruse at your local library will definitely give you a handful of shortcuts that you wouldn't admit to not having known. If you think there's room for you to learn something that will help you make files faster, more stable, more consistent, or that include illustrations, photographic special effects, or animated content, this is just the read you need.

Very well written. Good for intermediate users, and a very nice review for advanced users. I used to use Quark 3.2 and 6 back in the day and then took a hiatus from desktop publishing for several years. Quark 8 is pretty different to its predecessors, and this book covers those changes really well. Plus it gives some tips on typography. But if you're a total beginner it might be kind of hard to keep up.

I was hoping this would list the changes from QXP 6 by the various functions. A technical manual would have better served my needs. Also I wish there had been a map for finding where various functions had been moved in the menu bar.
