Editorial Reviews

Directed by Dustin Hoffman and based on the play by Ronald Harwood. The film stars Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Billy Connolly as retired Opera singers who annually put on a concert to celebrate Verdis birthday. The arrival of the fourth member of the quartet, Jean (Smith) disrupts the equilibrium. This results in old rivalries and theatrical temperaments and it becomes unclear if the show will or will not go on.

5.0 out of 5 stars What we really heard in the film June 19, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Granted the music by Dario Marianelli composed for this film is very fine and the excerpts from the `guests' as singers who could fill the roles suggested and portrayed in the film are quite fine, but so many wonder who we actually were hearing in the movie. Thus the following is offered for enlightenment and curiosity.

"Libiamo ne'lieti calici (Brindisi)"from "La Traviata: Act 1"
Composed by Giuseppe Verdi
Orchestral arrangement by Carmen Dragon
Performed by Danish Nation Chamber Orchestra
Conducted by James Morgan
"Fantasia for Clarinet" On the Opera "La Traviata" (Op. 45)
Composed by Donato Lovreglio
Performed by Colin Bradbury
"Czardas" Composed by Vittorio Monti
Performed by John Georgiadis and Colin Bradbury
"Who is Sylvia" Composed by Franz Schubert
Arranged for clarinet and Performed by Colin Bradbury
"Libiamo ne' lieti calici (Brindisi)" from "La Traviata: Act 1"
Composed by Giuseppe Verdi Arrangement by Morgan Pochin
Performed by Léon Charles, Nuala Willis, John Rawnsley, Melodie Waddingham, Cynthia Morey, Jennifer Adams-Barbaro, Cherith Millburn-Fryer, Justin Lavender, Richard Lea, Geoffrey Newman, Gregor Kowalski, John Farrington, Ian Jones, Sylvia Jones, Jenny Hill, Ann Mabey, Vivienne Ross, Miriam McLeod, Eileen Hamilton, ZoŽ Haydn, John Winfield, Martin Nelson, and Patricia Varley
"Flowers that Bloom in the Spring" [The Mikado / Act 2]
Composed by William S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan
Performed by Cynthia Morey, Melodie Waddingham, Nuala Willis, and John Rawnsley

5.0 out of 5 stars Just like the movie February 10, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Isn't it lovely when you can listen to a sound track from a movie and be right back there in each scene! Such was the case with Quartet. Beautiful sound quality and just lovely to listen to over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Here's a Movie For adults and a Soundtrack to Match February 27, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
"Quartet" is a movie that real adults can love. At both screenings I've seen, the audience applauded as the credits rolled which is highly unusual for a motion picture audience. The story line is simple: Residents of an English retirement home for musicians must raise money to keep their home open in spite of the difficulties resulting from simply growing older and not being at their peak in terms of performance. To achieve their goal, they decide to participate in a performance even though some of them fear performing in public again. The musical score soars and provides beauty to the film and brings that beauty back when the film is long over. The music on the soundtrack is comprised of classic music from Verdi, Haydn and others as well as original music by Dario Marianelli who also created music for the movie "Atonement."

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It! March 9, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
The movie was amazingly good, and the soundtrack, of course, was incredible. Some of the greatest artists of our time perfroming some of greatest music from another time. It is wonderful to have this music collected on one CD. And if you are new to this type of music, you could not get a better introduction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Movie more enjoyable than the soundtrack April 5, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I should have realized that some of the music is background music (chamber like) - not enough of the music I loved during the movie.
