Review

[Jack Sheldon's] two Jazz West albums that make up most of The Quartet & the Quintet are the work of a talented young man growing a style. In Al Cohn's ballad Ah Moore there are premonitions of the ravishing playing that Sheldon would do a decade later for Johnny Mandel on the sound track of The Sandpiper. -- Jazz Times

Jack Sheldon is an enigma to me because as I listen to these 1954/1955 Pacific Jazz recordings I can't fathom why he didn't get wider recognition. But the answer may be two words - Chet Baker. Sheldon I think had the unfortunate timing to come on the west coast cool scene at the same time as Baker but didn't have his boyish good looks or melt-away voice which in part vaulted Baker to international acclaim. But Sheldon is a fabulous trumpeter with a unique fuzzy tone quality that is complimented perfectly here on tracks 12-19 by Zoot Sims. This CD is a comination of two sessions featuring mostly up tempo charts - some blues, a few standards but mostly west coast originals in the genre made famous by Baker and Mulligan. But Sheldon holds his own here with a great rhythm section on both sessions as well as Simms and Joe Maini on alto on a few cuts. If you like Chet, Gerry, Shorty Rogers or Bill Perkins you'll love this classic.

Think I can answer last reviewers question.First there were many other West Coast competitors and as and aggregate Sheldon's LP's were were inconsistent in quality. He also did studio work and even worked as and actor on TV with a comedy show that failed based on the "The Fugitive" called "Run Buddy Run".But this was his jewel in his crown. On the great Jazz West label it was a quartet Quin who had some killer West Coast and "No Coast" players (term I sue to refer to East Coast style cats who could be from anywhere but had that East Coast energy. The sessions include:
Kenny Drew Piano
Gene Gammage Drums
Joe Maini Sax (Alto)
Larance Marable Drums
Walter Norris Piano
Ralph Pena Bass
Patrick Roques Reissue Design
Zoot Sims Sax (Tenor)
Leroy Vinnegar Bass
Bobby Whitlock Bass
The songs are a mix of standards and originals:
1. Contour -Kenny Drew
2. It's Only a Paper Moon -Billy Rose
3. Leroy's Blues - Kenny Drew
4. Cheek to Cheek - Irving Berlin
5. Streets of Madashi -Norris, Walter
6. Get Out of Town -Cole Porter
7. Ah Moore - Al Cohn
8. Dozo (Let's Go) - Jack Sheldon, Norris, Walter
9. Mad About the Boy - Noel Coward
10. Toot Sweet - Ralph Pena
11. Jack Departs - Walter Norris
12. What Is There to Say? - Vernon Duke
13. Groovus Mentus - Jack Sheldon
14. Beach-Wise - Whitlock, Bob
15. Palermo Walk -Whitlock, Bob
16. Blues - Jack Sheldon
17. Irresistible You - Raye
18. Guatemala - Walter- Norris, Walter
19. I'm Getting Sentimental over You -George Bassman
The results a combination of straight ahead a cool school and are constantly swinging as you might expect with Drew and Zoot. But what's interesting to me is Walter Norris.

I absolutely agree with the previous two reviewers. These are the best Sheldon recordings. But be aware of the jap EMI 2006 edition. (I don't know if there is a different 2008 edition as stated- I ordered the 2008 edition and I received the 2006 one).It has only 14 tracks instead of 19. The session with Kenny Drew is missing (the first 5 tracks in chazzbo's review). And the missing tracks are so fine that I wouldn't buy it if I knew.
