Editorial Reviews

Quartette Humaine is the first creative collaboration between keyboardist -composer Bob James and alto saxophonist David Sanborn since their million-selling, Grammy-winning album, Double Vision, twenty-five years ago. With Quartette Humaine, James and Sanborn eschew the pop and R&B production values that mark large chunks of their careers and offer instead an all-acoustic quartet recital consisting of
six new compositions by James, three pieces by Sanborn and a James-arranged standard. Joined by legendary drummer Steve Gadd and bass giant James Genus, Quartette Humaine is reflective and swinging with unfailingly melodic improvising and beautiful tonalities. "We felt it/s far more exciting and adventurous to move forward," James says. "Times have changed and we have changed." Adds Sanborn,"At this stage of my life, I wanted more than anything to play music that's challenging and fun, outside the style we've been associated
with." It's a poignant coincidence that the recording sessions occurred a week after the death of iconic pianist-composer Dave Brubeck, and the album evokes the sound of the Brubeck quartet with Paul Desmond. Bob James and David Sanborn have produced another
masterpiece.

I didn't buy this CD on Amazon. I went to a David Sanborn & Bob James concert, heard the music live first and then bought it after the show. These guys blew me away! I couldn't begin to describe this music. You just have to listen to it. They said that one of the songs, "Follow Me", was written as a tribute to Dave Brubeck. The drummer and the young man playing the upright bass did a fabulous job too.

I don't know if Amazon will let me paste it, but here's a link to them on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxyrHFK2Uxk

As an aside, while waiting in line to get an autograph that night, I saw David Sanborn talking to a little kid. He was curious about all things saxpohone. David was so kind and patient while he answered every one of this little boy's questions. That really impressed me. Made me like him even more.

I just bought the album on Google Play, and it is fantastic! I only got the 9 songs for $8.99. The album is definitely more straight-ahead jazz based than the more pop oriented Double Vision. I love both straight ahead jazz and pop (I tend to like more sophisticated pop), and if you have the patience to absorb the deeper meaning behind straight ahead jazz, you will enjoy this album.

It is interesting to see how my appreciation of music has changed over the decades. When Double Vision was released, I was in my teens, and I appreciated the intensity and "need to impress" of that album. Now, in my forties, I have developed the patience and life experience necessary to appreciate much more sophisticated music. That is what Quartette Humaine is: grown up people's music. If you only enjoy Taylor Swift or Rihanna, this album will probably not be your cup of tea. But if you like Basia, Norah Jones, or Cassandra Wilson, you will enjoy this album. I have listened to it multiple times, and it is like a Picasso painting: there are so many nuances and layers that more is revealed each time that I listed to it. Double Vision is like a very slick drawing by a good speed artist; Quartette Humaine is like a piece drawn by a master painter who has taken years to develop his craft, and who is a master of subtle expression.

I give it 10 out of 10 stars.

I have listened to this album several times since I received it yesterday. I love it! It's an excellent companion to their first album, "Double Vision" from 1986. Some may find the album boring because Bob James and David Sanborn didn't take a lot of chances with the selections. They're all pretty laid back and easy on the ears.

My favorite track would have to be "Sofia" because it's just beautiful. The first two tracks are very nice too. That's not to take away from the rest of the album, which is very good. Honestly, there isn't a bad piece on the CD.

Enjoy!

The CD arrived at my home mailbox about 3 weeks ago. Packaging was more than adequate in protecting the CD during shipment. Mr. James and Mr. Sanborn and the other great musicians who performed on this CD have created an utterly superb jazz production for the public to enjoy. I would love to hear these gentlemen perform this great suite of music in a live setting. Thank you once again, Amazon, for providing me this superb musical effort at such a great price.

After this pair's classic, Double Vision, nothing else has yet equalled that piece. This recording is still worth having in your collection, but if you're expecting something as great as Double Vision, you'll be left a bit disappointed.
