4.0 out of 5 stars sexy instead of sober, fast instead of majestic, pleasure, December 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Quartier Mozart [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Flying in the face of the quiet eternal African dramas that find favour in the West, Bekolo's debut feature is a wild ride through the vanities and sex games of one corner of Yaounde. A cocky young woman nicknamed Queen of the Hood gets the neighborhood sorceress to turn her into a man so she can satisfy her curiosity about the other side. Cockier than ever, she moves among the quarter's players, wise women and pompous old men, getting an in-skin lesson in gender. The story mixes magic and satire. the characters feel tradition through a filter of Nike and Denzel Washington. The style is marked by colour, jump cuts and tons of music. For its groundbreaking style and liberating content, this is one of Africa's most important films.

Cameron Bailey Now Magazine, Toronto April 1996

4.0 out of 5 stars Africa never seemed as visceral, real and ahem, MODERN!, February 17, 2000

I liked this. Something I can't put my finger on, but it had a real, raw feel to it but wholly accessible to us Westerners/Americans. It was strangely charming, just so gritty but endearing. Another example that less is more, so HEAR THAT JAMES "cocky SOB" CAMERON? This had a reduced, but REAL feel to it and it was bizarre for me admittedly to see such a people I consider so 'backasswards' (as we say in TX) to have such American cultural references. All the characters were so believable, real, affable, and the syncopated music was totally MTV. An unusual experience but a great, pleasurable one. C'est si bon....quel terrible! C'est magnifique!
