Book Description

0521624177 978-0521624176 November 13, 1999
The Quaternary has been a period of major climatic and environmental oscillations, and our knowledge of these past variations is important for our understanding of the possible impact of human activity on the present-day environment. Quaternary Climates, Environments and Magnetism presents an up-to-date account of the rich variety of uses of magnetic measurements in the environmental geosciences. Ten chapters by leading world authorities describe the highlights of environmental magnetic work during the past decade and identify directions for future research. This comprehensive and multidisciplinary coverage leads to a more thorough understanding of the environmental processes involved. This volume will be of interest to research scientists from a wide range of disciplines working on Quaternary environments, including earth and environmental sciences, physical geology, geography, and palaeoclimatology. It will also be valuable as a supplementary text for graduates and advanced undergraduates.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I highly recommend this well-written and organized book..." Priscum

"Quaternary Climates is an excellent choice for anyone with interests in climatic, environmental, or magnetic studies...From the preface to the detailed index, the reader will find much to be pleased about, and the breadth of the coverage in ten chapters is amazing...Highly recommended." Choice

"Quarternary Climates, Environments and Magnetism contains a series of informative papers that provide a good, comprehensive introduction to the field of environmental magnetism. It belongs on the shelf of anyone with a serious interest in environmental magnetism...Maher and Thompson's book is the only one available that combines the study of Quarternary environments and the techniques of environmental magnetism into a single volume." Palaios

"The book, carefully edited by top specialists in this sphere, introduces the reader to the current methods of environmental magnetism...The substance of this volume is very interdisciplinary, whereby researchers from different fields in the earth sciences may profit equally. The book, however, seems to be necessary for environmental scientists, climatologists and paleomagneticians. It may be also of interest for graduates, particularly those practicing in environmental sciences." Pure Appl. Geophy

This review is from: Quaternary Climates, Environments and Magnetism (Hardcover)
This work is composed of a collection of chapters oriented around separate authors in an edited text format. The book provides significant details overall about the past earth climate issues and assiduous surveys and analysis of magnetism and the sundry effects of other processes upon magnetism. Increases and decreases in magnetism are mentioned as are some rather dramatic climatic change events long ago. The book is difficult to read for those who have no experience or background in the field of geological studies, but for those who do, this is a terrific place to look for supplemental information for your given field if it be related to the general rubric.
