Simply.... Flawless!,
By Sergio "pop-music-lover" (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías La Dormida (Audio CD)
"Lo que te conte mientras te hacias la dormida" was nominated for many prestigious awards and nominations, including "Premios lo Nuestro" amd "Premios Amigo." Right after its release, it sold an outstanding half million copies in Spain and another half million copies in North and South America. At this point, this album has exceed the One and a half million copies and doesn't stop.
Here's a description and rating of each song in this album: Puedes Contar Conmigo- Its first single. Very energetic, written entirely by Amaia (the vocalist.) In my opinion, my favorite song. R: 5/5 20 de enero- Also very energetic. Beautiful, romantic lyrics. R: 4.5/5 Rosas- The BIG hit! Another single. Not as energetic as the previous 2 songs but beautiful lyrics. This is more of like a pop ballad. This song ranked in #1 in Mexico and Spain and ranked one of the highest positions in the U.S. and other countries. Definately, one of my favorites. R: 5/5 Deseos de cosas imposibles- Its third single. Filled with energy and figurative language including metaphors. R: 4/5 Geografia- The last single. You can dance you can sing to this song you can do whatever you want with this song. The lyrics talk about two people in love wanting to live alone in this isolated planet. Very romantic. R: 4.5/5 Un Mundo Mejor- This song makes me travel to countries were poverty is present like in the countries of South America. There's just something I like about this song but I can't figure it out. 4.5/5 Tu y Yo- Very sweet melody. Contains the voice of Xabier San Martin which sings this song with Amaia. Wonderful melody. R:4.5/5 La Esperanza Debida- My second favorite after Puedes Contar Conmigo. They Lyrics almost makes me cry. Its filled with passion, feeling, grief... The lyrics talk about a people trying to escape their country and immigrate to a better country and they fail in their intent... R: 5/5 Vestido Azul- My favorite part is the intro. It has a touch of Rock and Roll. Like La Esperanza Debida, is filled with feeling but the feeling is different. Not very much to say about this song. R: 3.5/5 Adios- Love the lyrics. I like when it says "Ven, calmate no llores mas si cierras los ojos veras que sigo aqui junto a ti..." Somehow when I listen to this song, it remembers me of Amaia Montero. R: 4.5/5 Perdoname- Different from all the other songs. Different kind of instruments used or something. Everything is just so different... the music, the lyrics. Everything. R: 4/5 La paz de tus ojos- My favorite part of the song is when it says, "Que necesito la paz que se esconde en tus ojos y esa ancia en tu boca que te da la razon. Ven cuentame aquella historia de princesas de amores que un dia te conte yo..." The feeling that's obviously found here is Passion. My third favorite. R: 5/5 Nadie como tu- Another ballad. I think this was just a filler song. Very dull, boring. The only thing I like is that's kind of romantic but nothing compared to "Rosas." R: 2.5/5 Historia de un Sueño- This Song Breaks my heart. I mean the Music, the lyrics, everything is so hearbreaking! If you already have this album pay attention to the lyrics. It will make you cry. I can't explain you just have to hear it. R: 5/5 Bonustrack[Untitled]- The hidden track. I was so surprised when I heard this song! I was listening to Historia de un Sueño and right after it finished I thought The CD will stop! But instead this great music started to surround me. This is the most electric, energetic song out of La Oreja de Van Gogh's career. I just love this song. If you don't have this album you should buy it so you can listen to this outstanding song. R: 5/5 Overall this Album is not good... It's Excellent! Every song has it's own style. What a masterpiece. What a Music Bliss! The cover art is also so GREAT! What A great oppurtunity For Amaia to show off her looks! Everything is so Awesome about this band. They're Great. I hoped you learned more about this album. Amaia is such a beauty. She's flawless. Recommended: Of Course!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Buy this CD. Why RESIST?

When I first listened to this album, I was a bit disappointed and thought La Oreja were repeating themselves. Then I listened to it again, and again, and realized how wrong I was. It's been a month now and I listen to it at least three times every day! This album requires more attention than El viaje de Copperpot. Lyrics are more complicated and it takes a while to appreciate the real genious of most songs. THE HIGHLIGHTS There are so many other good tracks such as: There are two tracks I don't dislike, but definitely believe they're not as good as the rest: In the end, La Oreja's third album is their best, but it needs your full attention before showing its true colors. I LOVE THIS CD!!! I was in a music store looking for a Nek cd, an Italian singer (check him out if you don't know who he is--he's italian but also sings in spanish), but they had never heard of Nek. So I was determined to get SOMETHING. I nearly got a cd in Arabic (I have a thing for languages) but it was between that and this. They had those things where you can scan a cd and listen to clips of songs, so I was doing that by picking up random cds from the World Music rack. When I came across La Oreja de Van Gogh, I thought, well this sounds pretty good; I'll take a risk and get it.
I am sooo glad that I bought it! It's such a great group--the tunes really stay in your head. My favs are: Puedes Contar Conmigo, Rosas, Geografia, Tu y Yo, Vestido Azul, Perdoname, and La Paz de Tus Ojos. Really, ALL of them are great. The last track is a little weird because it doesn't have many lyrics and it's just like a dance number, but it's not bad. Buy this cd, you will not regret it! It's one of my favorite cds right now, I love it!!

The songs are extreeeemely cathcy, but it doesn't mean they are shallow or uninteresting, quite the opposite - they are catchy and clever.
The vocalist has a very sweet voice which blends very well withe the music. I bought the CD because I had listened to a sample, which I found intriguing, in iTunes. It is nice to listen to the CD while reading or resting, drinking a nice soft drink.

It's been a while since I popped in a CD that went straight to headphones. I'm not a guy who dances to music. While a whole crowd may get crazy, for some reason I stand in the background absorbing every sound and intricacy. If there's talent, I'll notice. I discovered music late at the age of 17. The first music I liked I loved, and I always listened to it through headphones, appreciating every sound- sometimes quite loudly. Yet, it has been years since I last heard music that is precisely to my taste. The headphones weren't getting much use, and my music mostly blared loudly through a stereo (though I still would just stand back and audio-observe). I sampled this CD before I bought it, and I had a hunch that its impact would remind me of before. The CD went straight into my personal CD player, and I knew I was right. This is rock music from Spain. Well, it's referred to as pop, but I'll call it rock since it's acoustic. I love it when bands play pop-type songs with rock instruments! That shows how talented they are. They wield the instruments so well that there is no limit to their creations. It isn't three-chord blandness. For some reason, though, the music has made me talk in my sleep a lot. Spanish from Spain sounds a little different from Spanish spoken from other countries, and I guess its relation to English creates a subliminal, subconscious pondering over it- in the form of sleep talk. Anyway, my very favorite track is "Rosas." Listen to it before watching the vid. A music video can't possibly do a song justice that is this well-written. The music video isn't bad, but the song by itself is one of the most amazing melodies I've ever heard. The support vocals are just amazing. Song 5, if taken originally, has a punch and might that makes it more than just a dance-type song. If you hear what I hear, it'll sound more like, shall I say, "inspiring..." I usually backtrack and buy previous albums of a new band I discover, but this album is hard to match. Of course, since progress is the epitome of good music, that is a very good sign.

¡Increíble!,

I thought "Viaje de Copperpot" was as good as pop/rock music could be. Incredibly, this CD is at least as good as LODVG's previous outstanding effort. The music on this CD begins with the more-lively tunes, then gradually slows the pace toward the end (with several exceptions). My favorite LODVG song is "20 de Enero," with its early 1980s pop/rock sound and the occasional chimes. Actually, to me, this CD doesn't sound as "pop" as the previous one (Viaje+). It seems a more mature (for the lack of a better word) sound. As always, Amaia's vocals are clear, which is wonderful for those of us who like the songs almost as much for the language (European Spanish) as for the music itself.I was pleased to note that the "bonus track" was given its own track this time, rather than sharing one like "Tic Tac" in the previous CD. This CD allows access to the "exclusive zone" on LODVG's Website. That's a nice additional feature to an already excellent disc. ¡Ojalá que pudiera darlo SEIS estrellas!

This CD is absolutely awesome! I love this group. The first time I heard them I was studying abroad in Spain, and last summer I bought this CD while doing an internship there. I also heard them live last summer and they rock. All of their songs have an awesome beat, and you can listen to the whole CD and not want to skip over anything it is so good. I would recommend it to anyone that likes Spanish pop.

I'm absolutely hooked on this group. Their creativity is remarkable. The way they connect tempos, rhythms and Amaias voice is Spanish music at its best. Their music is upbeat and although I consider LODVG a pop/rock group with a taste of the 80's - they are filling a void to a vacuum of fun and uplifting music that has been missing from today's contemporary groups. Their lyrics have a touch of naivete- of romance and innocence, of hope and optimism with ingenious sophistication. This is an A++ album- highly recommend it. My favorite tracks? Un Mundo Mejor - sound like a mix of Duran Duran w/the Gogos Vestido Azul- Classy Perdoname- Rock with a jazzy flavor La paz de tus ojos - profound love

Spanish Pop at its best,

This guys nailed it. Since Mecano no one in Spain was able to master the formula of doing simple, cool and different pop. With obvious references to the 80's Mecano in voice and in some cases musical style, "la oreja" manage to be an all around excellent CD. Not just one song but a full track list of memorable pop in spanish, with even surprising good lyrics. Is good to know that Spain is not only exporting reality show formulaic singers but also a creative and powerful pop bands.

Definitive Spanish Pop/Rock,
By
This review is from: Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías La Dormida (Audio CD)
LODVG has undoubtedly managed to create the definitive pop album of any Spanish group in 2003! Lo Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida (which actually translates as "What I Told You While You Pretended To Be Asleep") supplants their excellent previous albums as their finest release yet. It has a wide range of styles and moods, including songs similar to their moody signature ballads from previous albums; but it's also great to see the group testing the waters of styles they hadn't previously explored. "Geografia" fits the latter category well. Amaia's magically rich vocal skills meld beautifully with a very Latin tempo and arrangement to show that Spanish pop isn't wedded to a particular musical style or locked into purely pop-sounding arrangements. "Tu y Yo" and "Rosas" hearken back to the well-known ballads of LODVG's previous albums, and fans of those will no doubt be thoroughly pleased with each of these selections. While I don't dislike any of the songs from this album, three additional favorites I would add to the other songs mentioned above are "20 de enero," "Vestido Azul" and the hidden dance song on track 15 ("Untitled.") Each of these offers the appreciative listener a treat depending on his or her mood at the moment. Finally, I agree with other reviewers who have recommended LODVG for use in Spanish language classrooms. I have taught many different levels of Spanish to adolescents and adults, and invariably students name LODVG their favorite group in Spanish. Amaia's beautiful voice and excellent intonation really make their songs useful for listening comprehension exercises and vocabulary building! |
