Biography

Four-times-married Doris Day made her name as the wholesome American gal with a hint of sass. Her cinematic career is littered with fine examples of the stereotype, and she has acted, danced and sung her way into the hearts of film-goers everywhere.

She was born on April 3 1924 (or 1922, depends on your source) and her acting career began in 1948, shortly after her separation from her second… Read more in Amazon's Doris Day Store

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Doris Day Music Anthology, a MUST-HAVE!!, July 4, 2001

As a devoted and somewhat obsessed fan of Doris Day and all her many incredible accomplishments in movies and recordings, these box sets by Bear Family from Germany are a MUST HAVE for serious Doris Day collectors. There are a total of 4 box sets, covering her entire singng career. Box #1 is a 6-CD set, from 1947-1950. Box #2 is a 5-CD set, from 1951-1955. Box #3 is a 6-CD set, from 1956-1959, and Box #4 is an 8-CD set, from 1960-1967. All these box sets come with a gorgeous hardcover book, overflowing with photos of Doris Day, along with her movie history. I can't say enough good things about this collection. They are over .....each, but worth EVERY PENNY, and if CDs could wear out, then mine should be full of holes by now. I play them DAILY. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Day Shines, July 3, 2001
By
Scott Moore (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Que Sera Sera (Audio CD)
The Bear Family has done it again. This fastidiously researched perfect collection of Day songs from the late fifties, represents the singer in her heyday. She was finding her voice, gaining maturity and had yet to watch her recording career dissintigrate into the overrorchastrated grave that buried much of her early sixties work. On tracks like "Autumn Leaves" and "Close Your Eyes" La Day is mature and sensual. Evoking true emotion in each number. Given the Bear Families almost maniacal drive to put EVERYTHING recorded during this period into the collection, some of her movie tie-in, pablum is here (i.e. "Tunnel of Love"). But all said, Day is superb enough as a vocalist to please any listenner of easy listenning. This collection is complete enough for not only Day fans, but also for the casual listenner.

No. #3 of the four Bear Family box-sets covers Doris Day's years from "The Man Who Knew Too Much" to "Pillow Talk", with her musical output from Columbia Records in between. You get 5 discs and a great hardback book, plenty to delight Day's fans, although her material is stuck in a post-Big Band era rut--nothing eclectic or adventuresome. It's a very cozy set, with the best tracks worth noting: the poppy "Walk a Chalk Line", the blissful "Soft as the Starlight", unreleased songs like "That Jane From Maine", the wonderfully romantic "Moonglow", "The Lamp is Low" and "It's Easy to Remember". Certainly worth owning, however the best years were just ahead...
