Book Description

6 and up1 and up
This is the timeless folktale of a young prince who undoes the terrible spell on a castle by accomplishing three impossible tasks with the help of some small creatures he saved from cruelty. The lean narrative moves quickly to its satisfying conclusion and preserves just the essentials to keep a child's attention and interest. Iassen Ghiuselev is a master draughtsman who meticulously executes every nuance of the situation, costumes, and characters. His settings, in the old world beauty of the Renaissance, carry a bearing and weight in sharp contrast to the pastel-pretty designs of other illustrated fairy tales. The rich tapestry colors and lavish attention to detail create an atmospheric mystery and enrich the story with a magic of their own.

5.0 out of 5 stars A picturebook version of the classic fairytale, May 23, 2003
This review is from: The Queen Bee (Hardcover)
The Queen Bee is a picturebook version of the classic fairytale by the Brothers Grimm, about a young prince named Dimwit who must accomplish three impossible tasks to break the spell surrounding a mysterious castle. Yet the impossible becomes possible with the help of small creatures he rescued from torment. The impressive color illustrations by Iassen Ghiuselev are reminiscent of Renaissance style artwork and wonderfully enhance this amusing and magical fairy tale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome illustrations, August 20, 2009
This review is from: The Queen Bee (Hardcover)
A lesser-known Grimm tale, beautifully and lushly illustrated.

The youngest of three brothers, called Dimwit, is mocked by his brothers for his weakness, yet because of his kind heart he is able to perform three impossible tasks and save all who are in the castle. A sort of Renaissance version of Aesop's "Androcles and the Lion."
