Most books about clutter boil down to: look at what you've got, decide whether you want what you have, and figure out what to do with what remains. It is in this last category -- figure out what to do with what you keep -- that this book really shines. It contains a pile of suggestions for kitchen organization and some particularly helpful ideas about dealing with bedrooms and closets.

In addition, there is concise, but thorough coverage of how long to keep everything from condiments to tax returns. This is the longest list I have ever seen of how long foodstuffs keep in the fridge. The material is easy to read and use. Even the best organized person will find something to use in the plethora of information and ideas. We less than well organized folks will find a lot of advice that we will be able to put to use right now, and encouragement to do it. A great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars One too many sticky notes, March 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Queen of Clean Conquers Clutter (Paperback)
The Queen really hit my weak spot this time. The "Paper Chase" chapter offered me not just tips but helped me to understand why I felt so compelled to gather notes, articles, recipes, catalogs. I always wondered what my desk top looked like. Now I know...and boy do I need a tip to get that natural wood sheen back.

Let's be honest.. guys are not very clean.. and know even less about how to actually clean when they decide to pick things up. I have always turned to the Queen of Clean for help and once again she has hit a home run! This book was perfect for me. I have lots of clutter and junk and.. oh well.. you get the idea.. and the info in the 'Queen of Clean Conquers Clutter' was a huge help in getting my house not only in order, but looking good. I've actually had friends ask if I hired a maid. I just tell them.. no.. I did better than that I got the Queen of Clean! Thanks Queen, you're the best.

I am a total believer in Linda Cobb. She is amazing with all of her "cures" for (nearly) everything. This latest venture, "Queen of Clean Conquers Clutter" is just another easy way to take care of everything you didn't know what to do with it. She makes it easy to read and you feel as if you know her personally. I look forward to all of the books she still has to do as well. Thanks, Linda.

5.0 out of 5 stars The shove I needed!, March 14, 2003

This review is from: The Queen of Clean Conquers Clutter (Paperback)
The Queen of Clean is just like your favorite Auntie - inspiring, nudging and sharing her expertise. I've loved her since I first saw her on a local TV show.

As a died in the wool clutter magnet, I appreciated her common sense approach to the problem. No need to have a life changing moment - just get started!

Loved the tips on how long to keep food - my clutter extends to the pantry too!

Now if I can just get my husband to read this book...

5.0 out of 5 stars A "hoarder" no more, July 23, 2007
This review is from: The Queen of Clean Conquers Clutter (Paperback)
I was raised to be a packrat. My mom's house was practically unlivable for a time and as I entered adulthood my home slowly was becoming rat's nest. Full of things that "I just might need some day" or "This item reminds me of _____, so it's a keepsake." I'm that type of hoarder who hates to throw out "Perfectly good things that can still be used" even if I'd never use them. When I actually started avoiding going home because I couldn't stand to be there I said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH but I felt so overwhelmed and didn't know where to start!

I picked up this book "The Queen of Clean Conquers Clutter" by Linda Cobb and it saved me from my hoarding. It gave me very practical advice that I could actually use. It didn't judge me "the packrat" it just said "It is what it is and here's how to fix it."

What really made it all click for me was the focusing on small areas. Take one drawer or one counter and tackle it. Once that battle has been won you feel so great that you want to continue. Little by little my entire home became clutter free. This book made me realize that I didn't need these items. That in the grand scheme of life if I didn't save every nice gift bag or old butter container, it doesn't matter one bit. And while having some items as keepsakes are nice and should be kept, my memories are in my head, not in every little thing must be saved for the memory to be cherished.

My life is so much better now that I don't hoard. I actually like my home and enjoy being there. Thanks Linda Cobb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Common sense meets organization!, March 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Queen of Clean Conquers Clutter (Paperback)
This book brings straightforward and simple tools to help any pack rat or collector of darn near anything make sense of it all. I thought the Q-U-E-E-N mnemonic device was great. I have the five steps sitting on my desk - a much more uncluttered desk I might add. Write on, Queen!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for starting off, March 18, 2011
This review is from: The Queen of Clean Conquers Clutter (Paperback)
The Queen is back and she's at it again, this time with a book on conquering clutter. The domestic diva has her crown firmly on and goes from room to room with her duster.

In her introduction, Linda Cobb says that the key to get out from all the clutter is a matter of thoughtful elimination of time-wasting and space-wasting things, rather than adding things. She claims that the reader already has what it takes to conquer clutter and get organized.

In this book, Cobb goes through the most common areas of the house and uses a methodology to get organized, which focuses on five steps: Question, Unpack, Evaluate, Eliminate, and Neaten Up. This does a pretty good job of breaking down the process of organizing for those who are unfamiliar with what happens mentally when organizing.

The most difficult part of the process for chronic clutterbugs, is the Question and Evaluate stages, but Cobb doesn't spend much time delving into the mental blocks that prevent people from successful overcoming their hoarding or accumulating habits.

Most of Cobb's text consists of storage ideas and how to clean various locations and items. This does not help people who need to learn organizing principles and successful thought processes to use daily to maintain an organized lifestyle.

This book is more about organizing and less about decision-making processes for discarding. This book is for those who are looking for some inspiration to get started, but for those who truly need some psychological motive-exploring which is truly at the root of conquering clutter, look elsewhere.

I give this book a B-.
