Book Description

October 16, 2006
Queen of Diamonds is the story of Ngoc Soàn, a flamboyant Vietnamese gambler and businesswoman who has overcome gender barriers, racial discrimination and war wounds to build a thriving Philadelphia diamond company. When she discovers that wealth alone doesn't bring happiness, she pursues her dream - lowering diamond prices for the masses. With the De Beers diamond cartel in control of the world supply, Ngoc defies the cartel in her quest for a revolutionary mining discovery - a discovery that De Beers will do anything to suppress. A sinister Russian, a brilliant geologist, a rival tycoon and Ngoc's ambitious niece complicate Ngoc's risky bid to bypass the cartel. Enter Paul Weeks, master of surveillance and disguise, who sells Ngoc the secret mining specifications. In the process, he uncovers Ngoc's own painful secret, opening new possibilities for the Queen of Diamonds.

This book is simply gripping! I couldn't put it down. The characters are all fascinating and complicated people. The story is fascinating and the info on the diamond business is intriquing. If you're looking for someone new to read - try R.O. Palmer's Queen of Diamonds!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Thriller!, November 8, 2006
This review is from: Queen of Diamonds (Paperback)
If you like a thriller where characters jump off the page, Queen of Diamonds is for you. Ngoc Soan will stay with you longer than cookie-cutter lawyers and detectives, and you'll root vigorously for her as an underdog who makes her way in a tough new country and life. She has much to overcome, not the least of which is a world fraught with adversaries who want to bury her - in more ways than one.

Don't think this novel is all about characterizations though. There's an unlikely sweet romance and a thrilling plot -- and I guarantee you will look at diamonds in a new light. Palmer has obviously done his research.

The main plot has just the right amount of twists to keep you guessing without straining credulity (from the first page on, I couldn't put it down), and the pace occasionally slows just enough to learn about the seedier side of the diamond business.

I liked Palmer's first novel, Patriot James, but this one is even better - Queen of Diamonds is a winner!

A great read! A bunch of complex characters distilled slowly enough to keep them intriguing for the whole ride!If they survive the ride.
I'd like to see the Paul Weeks character again.
Bravo,R.O.Palmer!
