From School Library Journal
Grade 5-9 In eight chapters, the queen's life unfolds chronologically. Readers are given background on her family, including the three members who ruled before her. Elizabeth I became queen at 25; throughout her 44-year reign, several people plotted against her to gain the throne. Half of the chapters contain one- to two-page boxed sections that provide additional information. Most spreads have captioned black-and-white and color photographs and drawings. There is no shortage of books on the monarch for this age group, and there is little in this one to make it rise above the others, although the facts are there for report writers. Stick with what you already have, including Catherine Bush's Elizabeth I (Chelsea, 1987), which has smaller black-and-white illustrations, yet is more detailed; and Robert Green's Queen Elizabeth I (Watts, 1997), which is less detailed yet well-summarized. If you need more on the subject, this title will do. -Kathleen Simonetta, Indian Trails Public Library District, Wheeling, IL
