Gr. 4-6. Each book in the Famous Lives series features a well-known person in contemporary life or recent history. Presented roughly chronologically, the books introduce a series of topics on double-page spreads with a magazine-like combination of a few paragraphs of text, two or three captioned photos, and occasional sidebars. Gates looks at Microsoft founder Bill Gates, highlighting his enthusiasm for computers as a student and his thoughts on the future of computer networking. While his ruthlessness in business is noted, so are his philanthropic activities. Elizabeth II begins with her coronation day, then flashes back to follow her life from a child who never expected to be queen to a monarch who is about to celebrate her Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years on the throne. Short, readable texts combined with notable photographs make these books appealing introductory biographies. Carolyn Phelan
