Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grades 3-5--An account of the life of Britain's second longest reigning monarch. This oversized, well-organized title is divided into short, easily read sections. The book touches on many aspects of the queen's life, both public and private, without bias. Indeed, while Barton-Wood clearly admires the woman, she doesn't shrink from discussing less pleasant topics such as her subject's feelings about Princess Diana. The book is sprinkled with quotes from those close to the royal family and from the royals themselves. These personal insights go a long way toward making the monarch and her family more human. The layout features large print and glossy pages filled with captioned black-and-white and full-color photos. Libraries with older titles on Queen Elizabeth should consider updating their collections with this work.

From Booklist

Reviewed with Sara Barton-Wood's Bill Gates.

Gr. 4-6. Each book in the Famous Lives series features a well-known person in contemporary life or recent history. Presented roughly chronologically, the books introduce a series of topics on double-page spreads with a magazine-like combination of a few paragraphs of text, two or three captioned photos, and occasional sidebars. Gates looks at Microsoft founder Bill Gates, highlighting his enthusiasm for computers as a student and his thoughts on the future of computer networking. While his ruthlessness in business is noted, so are his philanthropic activities. Elizabeth II begins with her coronation day, then flashes back to follow her life from a child who never expected to be queen to a monarch who is about to celebrate her Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years on the throne. Short, readable texts combined with notable photographs make these books appealing introductory biographies. Carolyn Phelan
