Nadine is as content as a cow can be. Her life on Pete's farm is perfect. She loves to wander off on her own to smell the breezes, visit favorite spots, and search for stones for her collection. The other cows snicker at her solitary ways, so when Nadine finds an egg and naively assumes it's a stone, no one bothers to enlighten her. Instead, the other cows urge her to take great care of it.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-While the rest of the Holsteins cluster together to gossip, Nadine wanders about on her own, appreciating the farm and engaging in her favorite pastime-gathering stones. The others mockingly call her Queen Nadine and acknowledge her as Farmer Pete's favorite. When the old man decides that it would be easier to grow corn than to raise cows, the animals are trucked to another farm where Nadine becomes discontented and refuses to leave her stall. Pete appears on the scene and takes her home with him. She finds that one of the "rocks" she had collected has split in two and the chick that has emerged becomes her inseparable companion. Together with the farmer, they form an unlikely trio and begin a business of selling fresh corn at a roadside stand. Sitting atop Nadine's head, the grown chicken has the appearance of a crown, now making Queen Nadine an acceptable name. The full-color acrylic cartoons are perfect for this quirky tale. It will work well in a story-time setting or as pleasure reading.
