Editorial Reviews

This is the third in our series of expanded versions of albums by Etta James, one of the greatest and most influential recording artists of our times. Not previously available in its entirety on CD, 1964's aptly titled Queen Of Soul LP was produced in the main by Billy Davis, the A&R man who helped transform Chess Records from renowned purveyors of 1950s blues and R&B into one of the hippest soul outlets of the 1960s.

The original 10-track album is bolstered with 14 bonus titles recorded between 1962 and 1965. Together they show Etta's many sides, from the punchy soul of Pay Back and Only Time Will Tell to gorgeously orchestrated revivals of jazz standards such as Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be), with a few Nashville-cut country tunes included for good measure. Track selection by Mick Patrick, with notes by Garth Cartwright.

2011 turned out to be a bumper year for fans of the American Soul legend Etta James. February saw the "Who's Blue" Kent Soul compilation with 24 elusive tracks on Chess and Cadet - while October saw the first official CD release of "Call My Name" - a criminally forgotten Cadet Records LP from 1967. Then came "Losers Weepers" in October - an obscure album from 1970 with 11 bonus tracks (again first time on CD). Continuing that run into 2012 is this - her 1964 "Queen Of Soul" album in Stereo - also bolstered up with a copious amount of relevant bonus tracks. Here are the finite details...

UK released Monday 28 May 2012 (12 June 2012 in the USA) - Ace Records/Kent Soul CDKEND 377 breaks down as follows (68:22 minutes):
Tracks 1 to 10 are the 'Stereo' LP "Queen Of Soul" - released November 1964 in the USA on Argo Records LPS-4040

Track 11 is "You Got Me Where You Want Me" - a 1965 outtake first issued in 2000 on "The Chess Box" - a 3CD box set on MCA/Chess 088 112 288-2 [Disc 1]
Tracks 14, 20 and 22 are "You Can't Talk To A Fool", "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can He Be?)" and "Tomorrow Night" - all outtakes first released on the 1997 American CD compilation "These Foolish Things - The Classic Balladry Of Etta James" on MCA/Chess MCD 09354. The other bonus tracks are singles as listed below...

This CD will also allow fans to sequence almost 10 of her US 45's released off and around the album [track number after the title - exclusions noted]:
1. Stop The Wedding [16] b/w Street Of Tears [not included] on Argo 5418 (1962)
2. How Do You Speak To An Angel [17] b/w Would It Make Any Difference To You [15] on Argo 5430 (1962)
3. Pushover [13] b/w I Can't Hold It In Any More [23] on Argo 5437 (1963)
4.

Etta James performing upon the release of "Queen Of Soul" in 1964 at "The California Club", scorching hot SRO act was the one to catch at legendary South Central Los Angeles venue, extraordinary life-changing experience clear & memorable to this day...rangy gritty vocals featuring passionate volcanic emoting, complete with tears streaming down the great singers face while soaring through ballads and riveting hot rhythm numbers contained in fiery & masterful "Queen Of Soul", plus phenomenal bonus performances featuring numerous career-defining hits like the unforgettable "All I Could Do Is Cry", iconic anthem "At Last", roof-raising "Something's Got A Hold On Me", then that truly majestic ballad "Trust In Me", these classic performances made for a once in a lifetime captivating evening...thankfully had the opportunity to relay this "first time experience" to Etta James in person at Sunset Blvd. Tower Records book signing in the late nineties, Etta laughed telling me I was too young to have been there and in a way she was right...at sixteen went suit & tie with older friends to experience my favorite singer, luck would have it wasn't booted out & we were graciously given a ringside table, breathtaking to watch up close as nobody compared to this legendary lady letting it rip live, finally this sadly overlooked "Queen Of Soul" masterpiece has seen light of day in this tremendous & beautifully remastered release, would have been nice for Etta to know this wondrous effort was finally released and appreciated but now better late than never will have to suffice...Read more ›

Great songs and performance by Etta, but some of the recordings sound somewhat "muddy" as opposed to the same tunes that have appeared on various compilations through the years.

I did not like this CD. It represented her early days, to me this CD was a lot of screaming. I much prefer Etta James the mature and well rounded singer that she became. In my opinion this CD is not Etta at her best. To my regret I had to send it back. I appreciate the music sampler, this CD did not have the sampler when I preordered. I really missed her rich sounding voice. This CD was a disappointment to me.
