Punky lounge singer???,

Too bad there are some folks out there ripping this album, because they thought it was someone else. Oh well, that's the way some folks are...
Anyway, this is a pretty solid album. Pretty diverse selection of styles... Wouldn't be surprised to hear some of this in a nice nightclub or a seedy strip bar. On a few tunes, she really belts it out! It's smoky, sexy, jazzy, punkish, brassy, b#llsy, b$tchy with a pinch of burlesque-y gurl power. Total of 18 tracks, but would have been better if they cut a few off. It's an excellent listen, but some of the songs start to run together, simply because there are so many. Personal favorite is track 2, "You Are the Best Thing and the Worst Thing". Check it out. If you made it this far to find this album, then you will probably like it.

Each song is another style. Unlike most performers where you can not tell where one song ends and the next begins, this is a constant twist. Every style is touched upon and made her own. If you have an open mind, like all types of music and appreciate great female vocals, this cd is for you. You'll be happy you got it, I was :)

I first became aware of Devil Doll while working at a club in Tucson, AZ. I waslucky enough to have the night off and enjoy the show. Since then I've not missed a live show of hers in the Southwest. Like her live shows, this album is beautiful, breath taking, and down right impressive! Devil Doll walks on the edge of Rockabilly, punk, and swing...she takes no prisoners in her captivating lyrics and voice. She claims herself to sing about love with a jagged/tainted point of view. In addition, Colleen (the lead singer and the preeminent'Devil Doll') is also a very accomplished musican. Simply put this band is great, and the image of Devil Doll is right out of a 1950's pin up calendar! ENJOY!

Stumbled across this CD and it hasn't let me go since! She has amazing vocals, and the songs are catchy and haunting. Favorite tracks include Heart Sized Crush and King of Brooklyn, but I love them all! On constant replay in my car, at home, and at work.

Take a bit of Norah Jones, mix in a touch of Brian Setzer and add a dash of Horrorpops, and you might come close to Devil Doll. Perhaps one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. Right from the start with "St. Christopher" she grabs ahold of you and doesn't let go until it's over. Her vocal range is amazing, from the sultry lows hit in songs like "King Of Brooklyn" to the drawn out highs she hits in "Liquor Store". If you like Jazz, Blues, Swing, Rockabilly, Psychobilly, or just good music in general, then this album is a must have.

This album is great. Colleen is a great singer and the music is exceptional. My most favorite songs are: "St. Christopher" "It Was Raining" "King of Brooklyn" "Liquor Store" "Left" and "If I Died In Your Arms". I don't really like "Walk With Me" but its not torture.

I like her style, but the music lacks energy, movement, melody... it basically falls flat. Her vocals could use some work. Her voice is pleasing, but she doesn't add any interesting variations. It also falls flat. Overall though, it's a good start in the right direction. It just needs a shot of vibrancy all around.

The smokey rooms of the jazz age come ripping into the modern age,

Devil Doll is one hell of a band blending the sweet sounds of the jazz age with a modern rocky blues and a splash of punk. Colleen Duffy, the vocals, projects a sensuality and sexuality that bring to mind whiskey, cigar smoke and soft satin dresses. Imagine a jazz singer from the 20s flung into today and singing an almost punk rock. There is cussing in almost every song so these ain't for the younger or those that are easily offended, but man do these cats rock!

The lead singers soulful and sultry voice is all that ties this compilation into a cohesive disc, but it is so powerful it does it well. The musical styles are varied and it makes wonderful to listen to over and over.

Super. Sultry. Sexy. Just too Much!
An awesome variety of heartfelt songs make this album one of my favorites, I can't stop playing it. There's Latin dance, Swing, Ska, this chick Rocks. How did I not know about this record before? Now it is my job to tell everyone about it. This girl is not afraid to tell it like it is, damn the torpedos! The Devil Doll is powerful and outspoken, oozing sensuality. 9 out of 10. Highly recommended. |
