4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable academic history book, April 10, 2011

This review is from: Mary Queen of Scots in Nineteenth and Twentieth-Century Drama (Amer Univ Studies Ser XIX : General Literature, Vol 13) (Hardcover)
Mary Queen of Scots is a fascinating figure in history, and Pearl J. Brandwein does a remarkable job showing how her history has been interpreted and manipulated over the years. Citing plays that range from 1800 up until 1971 Brandwein gives well written examples of how these dramatists have altered the way people perceive Mary Stuart and her interactions with Elizabeth of England.

The book is clearly written for academia, but dont let that put you off if you are interesting in the subject matter, as it can be understood and followed by a general audience. Having previous knowledge of the life of Mary, Queen of Scots isn't a must, but it would probably add to one's enjoyment of the book.

Overall Mary Queen of Scots in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century drama is a fascinating read which anyone who is interested in Mary Stuart and how history is interpreted and adjusted may enjoy.
