Gr 4-7--A clear, well-written presentation of the life of the British monarch. Divided into five succinct chapters, the book contains information on Victoria's ancestry and childhood in Kensington Palace, her ascent to the throne, her political preferences and influences, her life with husband Albert, and a description of foreign relations during her reign. The good-sized type is easy on the eyes and captioned black-and-white photographs and full-color reproductions are placed near to their textual references. Victoria's long rule is related in an understandable way that will pique readers' interest. Additional resources are listed in the back, as is a list of books "for advanced readers." Web sites include a caution about the "changeable nature of the Internet." A substantial index is included. Though not as splashy as Jean-Loup Chiflet's Victoria and Her Times (Holt, 1997) or as detailed as Deirdre Shearman's Queen Victoria (Chelsea House, 1987; o.p.), this is an approachable introduction to this queen's life and times.
