Editorial Reviews

Review

After reading all three of the Wardstone novels I find myself wanting more. I love Hyden, Mikahl, and Phen. This is a great fantasy trilogy. Well written and worth every penny. The characters may never leave me -- Review of The Wizard and the Warlord - The Wardstone Trilogy Book Three -- Liz Cornwell, Amazon Review

If you haven't read the first book in this trilogy, The Sword and the Dragon, what are you waiting for? This so far has been the most exciting and vivid adult fantasy series I have ever read. Warning, there are spoilers for The Sword and the Dragon ahead, so if you haven't read it, stay away. I simply cannot do this review spoiler-free, but I will not spoil anything for K,Q,H,&F.

This book is an awesome continuation of the amazingness that was the first part of the trilogy. And let me warn you once again, this is no quick or easy read. It is a long series. But every second is worth it. K,Q,H,&F is a little bit shorter than the first book, but it still took me three days to get through. And I read fast.

During the first book, some of the characters I loved were killed. I was not a happy girl. But I still adored the book. There was an evil, evil villain and I was afraid that this book wasn't going to be able to stand up to the first book. But it did.

With the introduction of a couple of new characters, Oarly (a dwarf), and Phen (a young magician), there were amazing characters to love again. Also, the depth of King Mikhail and Hyden Hawk continued to grow. If that were even possible. I was also pleased to see that King Jarrek played a larger role in the story this time. I love King Jarrek, he's brave, tough, and loving, and one of my favorite secondary characters.

As for the villain aspect, I didn't find Ra'Gren or Shaella quite as intimidating or evil as Pael, but there were enough villains and conflict for it not to really matter. Plus you have the growth of Gerard in the Nethers and he is growing into a more evil villain by the minute. There was an incredible amount of action and the battle scenes were terrific.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great characters and lots of action March 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The first book was good but a little long that I had a hard time keeping track of things. This one is a little shorter and easier to follow since I knew the characters already. The only thing that annoyed me with this book was how some characters just get introduced as though they've been around the whole time; it's a little off-putting. Still, the characters are all pretty well written and detailed so you feel their actions are believable.

I liked the humor in this one, too. It seemed a little more light hearted in places than the first book. But it was still pretty dark, especially the way that Ra'Gren treated the enslaved people of the kingdom.

I love the action scenes in this book and the last. There is not a lot left to the imagination, with injuries and damaged described in deep detail. The writing is good and easy to follow, so it doesn't sound like some violence obsessed geek wrote it. In fact, for an independent author, this one is pretty good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why? June 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Why are these books so much fun to read? I don't know but they are. They have provided many hours of joy. The first book was good but this one was way better. The story just keeps getting better. I keep thinking they shouldn't be this good. But there is something I can't put my finger on that sucks me in and I can't stop reading. We lost a lot of characters in the first book most died nobly. In this book they stay around longer. This book moves along better and does not hop around so much. This is much better because it was easier to follow. This book continues with the story from book one and doesn't miss a beat.

There are some new turns in this book. The author does a good job of integrating the new turns into the main story that continues from book one. I like the way he has brother against brother. It was clever to do that. If you are looking for a fun fantasy novel this book and book one is something to check out. You could read this by itself but it loses something if you do not read the first book. I found the first book a little hard to read in the beginning but don't give up I promise you will like these.

4.0 out of 5 stars Had to... March 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had to read this book because I had already slogged through book one. At least this was somewhat better than that book. I did not have quite as hard a time reading this one, it was actually a pretty decent.

The characters were much more compelling in this book. I particularly liked how Gerard turned and joined the evil cartel. It added a very neat twist but once again he had an overabundance of details that overwhelmed the story at times and a ton of characters. There are so many of them I had a hard time keeping track of all of them. The book would be so much better if he cut down on both of those things because the plot is a really good one.

Like I said I did like this a lot better than the first book. I really did not like the first book and only decided to read this because I wanted to finish the story. Now I have finished it I have to read book three. And since book two was better than book one I am hoping book three is better than book two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down March 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Normally second books hit that sophomore slump and just aren't as good as the first books, but this is a rare case where the second book may be better than the first. I think that it's probably because it is a suspenseful, high action book and the characters have pretty much been established in the previous one, so that's out of the way. One thing that is better is the shift to the royals and just how they are going to handle the Dakanese invasion. It makes the book, and the characters, feel more grown-up and responsible for their actions.

The relationship between ill-fated brothers Gerard and Hyden is further explored as Gerard struggles to return from the nethers and Hyden seeks out the Silver Skull which could help bring him back. But Shaella is there between them, and you can't be sure who is going to have the most influence over the malleable Gerard. I liked the interaction between Mikahl and Hyden, too, and the introduction of Phen made the group a little more interesting.

I thoroughly enjoyed this second book and look forward to finishing the third one, which by the way is so far very, very good! I am impressed by this series overall, and think the author has a lot of potential to be very big.

From the Author
The jewel you see glowing in the ring in my old authors photo isn't really a jewel at all. It is the crystallized tear of a real dragon. In my novel "The Royal Dragoneers" you might find the moment where this wonderfully magical tear drop fell from a green dragons eye. It hardened on its way down to land in a mess of troll corpses that the dragon was laying on.

My grandfather died before I was born, but the ring was given to me by my mother, after my grandmother recently died. My grandfather had apparently won it in a poker game near the Red River between Texas and Oklahoma sometime in the early 1900's.

It has been a boon, the magic of the teardrop, for it brought you here to me didn't it? Now treat yourself to something fantastic and try out the free sample of one of my novels. I hope you enjoy the journey. It will be spectacular. Thanks M.R. Mathias
