Book Description

June 1, 2008 Collins Humour
Hinglish is a popular dialect composed of English combined with elements of Southern Asian languages. It is quickly becoming an international phenomenon thanks to the internet and the vastly popular Bollywood film industry. Collected here are some of the best-loved and most familiar Hinglish terms—including "chuddies" (underwear) and "badmash" (naughty)—designed to orient the newcomer to the language. Packed with intriguing facts and stories and illustrated throughout, this "pukka" (first class) reference to the newest iteration of English will charm and delight language-lovers and trend-spotters alike.

This review is from: The Queen's Hinglish: How to Speak Pukka (Collins Humour) (Hardcover)
The Queen's Hinglish: How to Speak Pukka (Collins Humour)

This book is a fairly good introduction to Hinglish for individuals new to the hybrid mix of Hindi/Urdu/Punjabi English. The pronunciation guide is a bit truncated for people with no exposure to the sounds of Hinglish, but aside from that, the list of words are quite thorough and interesting. If you have a rudimentary knowledge of the languages and culture of the Indian subcontinent, I would recommend a more advanced text. In closing, I would hope that the author would compose an audio guide to accompany the text, and a fascinating future text would cover Mumbai slang, which is a whole new linguistic world.

Down to earth and funny!

If you want to know what "Bonnet" and a "Muffler" mean to a person from India, read this to get an understanding!
